King Leopold I is the first King of Belgium, which became independent from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830. He is of German origin and is the eighth son of a duke. He was chosen as king because he proclaimed neutrality. He spoke German, French and English and could also speak a little Russian. He was married to the French Princess Charlotte. The King provided railways in Belgium and gave recognition to different religions, which led to religious freedom. The former Queen Victoria was the King's niece, which ensured good ties between the two kingdoms. Belgium was spared various revolutions throughout Europe thanks to the King's great efforts. He was very popular with the people. Unfortunately, he died on 10 December 1865 as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage and bronchitis.
