Andreas Vesalius
belgian doctor and anatomist
biografie:
Born on December 31, 1514, Vesalius was one of the founders of anatomy. He wrote "De humani corporis fabrica libri septem" seven books on the human body and anatomy. These eventually became the basis of medicine for many centuries to come (ca.1400 to 1600). Most physicians sat on a chair above the students and gave them instructions but Andreas was one of the only ones who stood with them (he saw everyone equally) to give them the instructions and point out everything exactly. He studied philosophy and law at the university of leuven where he quietly began to take an interest in anatomy as well and began dissecting small animals. He then studied medicine at the university of Paris according to the lord of Galenus,( Greek/Roman physician). He started to oppose the studies of Galenus and he received a lot of criticism for this so he moved back to the southern netherlands. Finally, Andreas Vesalius also became the body physician of Emperor Charles V.
