Gabriele Münter was a german painter. Along with Paula Modersohn-Becker, she is considered the best-known female representative of expressionism in Germany. She also drew, photographed and worked in the field of printmaking.
She was a co-founder of the painting community “Der Blaue Reiter”. Münter was with Wassily Kandinsky for a long time but could never fully cope with the separation from her partner. Afterall she safed a significant part of his works through the war and post-war period. It was only after Kandinsky's death that she was recognized as an independent artist. In 1957 she donated a selection of her own pictures and all of Kandinsky's works from her possession to the city of Munich.
