I have been teaching Statistics to high school students for over 20 years. In the late 1980’s I was given the task of developing a course that would be appropriate for juniors and seniors who elected not to take high school Calculus. I chose Statistics because I felt the subject would have the greatest impact and usefulness for the targeted group of students. Statistics is a part of our world and has applications that directly relate to many of the disciplines that students study in college. My goal was to allow students with a range of mathematical abilities to take a course that they could be successful in. The course was designed to use a learner-centered approach that involved exploring statistical properties through data collection and analysis. In 2005, I was hired to start an AP Statistics program at OES. I am excited to begin my 14th year as the lead teacher for this course. I will be teaching two of the three sections of AP Statistics this year.
In my personal life, I am blessed that all 5 of my grandchildren, ages 3 to 11, live in the Portland area. We enjoy time together on a regular basis both at home in Portland and at our summer retreat on Lake Mayfield, Washington. I also love to work-out, walk, garden, enjoy a cup of coffee while reading a great mystery, and travel in our RV.
