My name is Carmen Torres Boyle. I was born and raised in northern Spain, in Bilbao. I am very Spanish and I visit my family in Spain every year. I now reside in the Beaverton area with my husband Tom. I have a son who lives in San Diego and works for a financial company and a daughter who just graduated from Gonzaga University.
I joined OES in September 2004. During my tenure in Lower School, I taught Spanish, Kindergarten through Third Grade. I also worked in MS. Right now I am working exclusively for the US. Prior to teaching at OES, I taught students of all ages, from children to adults, in a variety of educational settings.
Learning a foreign language is active, not passive. Students don’t just study Spanish, they DO Spanish. Developing intercultural communication skills is at the core of our world language program. Each unit is an experience that leads to the next one, interconnected and always driven by promoting passion and persistence in learning a foreign language. To do this we try to reach out to all kinds of learners with games, skits, conversations, audio, videos, and online learning labs. In this way, each student becomes the engine of his or her education. Now, to acquire these intercultural skills the students need to do one thing and just one: TALK, TALK, TALK. Mistakes need to be accepted as part of the growth in another culture competency and if you add laughter and a relaxed atmosphere, learning happens. And that is what we do at OES. I will be teaching 2 courses this year: Spanish II and AP Spanish.
I graduated from Deusto University, a Jesuit university in Spain, with a Bachelor in History and a minor in Archaeology. I also obtained two master's degrees: one in Linguistics from the University of Jaén and one in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. I have a strong background in linguistics and a deep understanding of foreign language instruction...and I love what I do!!
I love traveling, swimming, the ocean, and hiking. I am very social and love great conversations. I love Oregon, which I think is the second most beautiful place on earth (after Spain of course!).
