Principal's 6 Week Update - Ms. Childress

Ms. Childress gives the Wilson learning community updates and information about:

  • Student Safety

  • Progress Reports

  • Extended Advisory Schedule

  • Caregiver Conferences

  • Student Involvement

Caregiver Conferences: October 13 and 14th, 2021

With almost two months in to the school year, caregivers and teachers may need to connect to make a plan of support for students. While Wilson staff is always open to connecting, our community sets aside two specific nights to be able to collaborate as teams for conferences.

Team conferences are scheduled by the caregivers and can be in-person or online for the evenings of October 13th and 14th.

Picture Retakes Thursday, 9/30 and Yearbook Orders Open

8th Grade Parents: Wilson Middle School is offering the opportunity to purchase a recognition ad for your child. Yearbook ads are a great way to celebrate student success and milestones and reflect on the person your student has become. Show your pride and support your school at the same time. Visit https://www.jostens.com/apps/jcom/router.mvc?affiliateId=2237387 to create your recognition ad. Ads will be available for purchase until Friday, January 28th. This offer is available for 8th grade students only.

Monday, 9/27: Extended Advisory Schedule

Each year, Northwest ISD recognizes the national suicide prevention month, September. During this time, secondary campuses utilize the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program to bring awareness of depression and prevention. The program aims to increase awareness and encourages students to seek help when they are concerned about themselves or a friend. The message of the SOS program is to A-C-T – Acknowledge the signs of depression or suicide; show you Care; and Tell a trusted adult. Students will engage with this conversation on Monday, during an extended advisory. Families received an email with additional details and parent resources earlier this week from the counselors, including instructions for families who may need their student to opt-out of this conversation.

Campus Routines

Beyond Free and Reduced Lunch...

While school day meals are free this year for middle school students, alerting the district that you qualify for free and reduced meals also helps your student have access to other programs such as weekend food assistance (Snack Packs), Angel Tree, and other services! This is an annual qualification process. Click the video for how to submit your application.

Follow that Bus with the MyView tracking app (available on the iOS App Store and Google Play). If you are experiencing issues with the app, please make sure that you are using the updated code – NW2021. You may also need to uninstall and reinstall the app with the code NW2021

Campus COVID Information

So I received a notification letter from the district...now what?

    • Does this mean my child was a "close contact"? No, it means they shared a class or group activity with a positive individual. Per current NISD protocols, you can choose to send your child to school while monitoring for symptoms.

    • Does my student have to quarantine? Not necessarily. Please refer to ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES available here when deciding whether a student should attend school. Alert the attendance office so they can note the reason for the absence.

    • Does my student need a test? Not necessarily. If they have not been exposed and are not displaying any symptoms, families may elect not to test. If a student is experiencing specific symptoms while on campus, they may be tested in the clinic. (see School Health Clinic Procedures for more information). Click here for Testing Locations in your County.

    • My letter says my child shares three classes. What does that mean...3 people or 1 person in 3 classes? It means that your child shares 3 classes with 1 person who tested positive. It does indicate the frequency of potential contact. You would get one letter for each case in that class and each letter shows how many classes they share with the individual.

(as of 9/2/21)

If Symptoms Appear While on Campus

School Health Clinic Procedures (as of 9.2.21):

  • Temperature and symptoms will be checked in the clinic to determine whether isolation is indicated. A student’s medical history will be considered when determining whether a student should be excluded.

  • Parents of students who are sent to the clinic for COVID symptoms during school hours will have the option to have their student screened for COVID. Parent permission is required and the Consent for COVID Testing form must be completed.

  • Students who present to the clinic with symptoms that could be COVID or another influenza-like-illness may be offered a face covering or mask, if they cannot be isolated from others and for the health and safety of others, until a parent or guardian can take them home.

  • When indicated, a student will be isolated from others until picked up by a parent or guardian in the campus clinic and should be picked up within 30 minutes and no later than 1 hour from the time the campus contacted the student’s parent or guardian.

General Resources

The district and campus continue to utilize text messaging as a way to communicate with families and staff about important dates and events. If you have not received any NISD texts, opt in and receive messages by texting Y to 67587.
