(90 min) We'll start with a presentation about orienteering and a progression of games to develop orienteering skills. Then we will go outdoors for a team "Score-O" to find checkpoints on a campus map. You'll develop a plan for bringing orienteering to your program.

Better orienteering for camps
60-75 minutes
We’ll talk about setting up classic point-to-point and “Score-O” style orienteering courses, and how to get an excellent orienteering map of your camp. We will share a progressive series of navigation games for kids starting as young as five years old, that lay the groundwork for orienteering. We will try out these games on the University campus and set you up for a rich and successful orienteering thread in your programs.

Orienteering in Your Space
Orienteering is a physically active experience that develops map navigation skills and can be implemented in any space, from an urban park, to a school playground, to a national forest. In our workshop, we will orienteer in teams around the Nature Center grounds, and play a progression of navigation skill-building exercises that demonstrate the adaptability of orienteering and the endless opportunities these activities present to explore unfamiliar and familiar spaces in a new way. Participants will engage in the activities, then discuss what skills they used and how to apply and adapt these activities to work with their programs.

Orienteering is a physically active learning experience that develops life navigation skills. Through orienteering activities, students observe and experience the environment, develop spatial reasoning, practice critical thinking, work together, and gain confidence at navigating in both familiar and new places. In this workshop we will tell you about the sport of orienteering and how you can implement a progression of navigation games. We will go outdoors for a team orienteering activity. You will try some introductory navigation games and learn everything you need to bring orienteering into your program. Come dressed for the weather!

Let's Go Outside and Play a Map Navigation Game
Join us for a navigation game in the neighboring park. We'll practice turning "just-a-game" into a deeper experience using tools like framing, scaffolding, metaphor, and debriefing steps.
Our organization works with schools and other youth-serving organizations to create orienteering-based curricula that develop observation, spatial reasoning, critical thinking, teamwork, and confidence in unfamiliar situations. In this workshop we will talk about the sport of orienteering and how you can implement a progression of navigation games.
Come prepared with outerwear to stay comfortable in today's weather. No previous skills or knowledge are required of attendees.

Orienteering for Youth
Navigation Games will explore and teach fun and engaging games for making and navigating with maps. During the indoor part of our session, we will discuss what orienteering is, why it is important to teach to children, and how to adopt and adapt our lessons in your space for your group! Workshop content will be specific to the attendees. From our inventory of activities for pre-schoolers to high schoolers, we will select activities according to who joins us. If the weather is good, we’ll take you to Tim Toomey Park (one block away) for outdoor activities and discuss some indoor alternatives; if it’s raining, we’ll do indoor activities and discuss outdoor alternatives.
