You want to bring orienteering to your school or program. This page tells you how to get started, at various budget levels.
You need three things:
Lesson plans
Maps
Equipment
We recommend the Navigation Games kit, which includes lesson plans, equipment and maps for an introductory curriculum. You will need to supply a map of your space.
These lesson plans are freely available on this site.
Introductory progression: use the Cambridge elementary progression on this page
Intermediate lessons: use activities from one or more of these progressions:
Various options:
Streamer markers and cones are included in the NG kit ($200, including other equipment)
Flagging tape; students write down the code on the flagging tape on cards that they carry with them. (~$3)
Pin punch orienteering flags (~$100 for 10)
Electronic timing system (~$2500 for a school kit with 10 checkpoints and 30 electronic scanners; requires additional equipment such as computer/tablet, traffic cones)
Maps for introductory games are included in the NG kit (Geometric-O, Basketball-O)
Make your own map - eg a drawing, aerial photo, or landscape architect's drawing
Apply for a map & grant from Orienteering USA's Youth Mapping Program (typically ~$400). This will give you a color PDF using international orienteering map symbols.
