Our staff can provide the following services:
Consulting, design and implementation of orienteering education for a school district
Teacher workshops, professional development
We offer consulting for schools for developing orienteering curricula and competitive teams.
We can deliver orienteering programs, and prefer to do so in a context where the school will continue the program on its own in the future. We provide materials, instructions and staff to oversee the programs. You supply teachers and chaperones to work with us, manage the children, and participate in the activities. We work with you ahead of time to optimize the program for your school or district.
Please contact us for pricing for our services.
We recommend that you invest in a good-quality orienteering map of your school grounds or nearby park that meets orienteering mapping standards. We will connect you with mappers through Orienteering USA's map development program. Your staff will be able to use the map for orienteering activities beyond our program, and we will provide example lesson plans to accompany the map. The cost of an orienteering map starts at $500 and depends on the size of the campus; OUSA has a grants program to pay half the cost. For grades K-5, we also recommend creating an isometric picture "map", as a stepping-stone for children to understand how to read the orienteering map.
In addition to maps, the following equipment is useful:
A way to mark each checkpoint (with a picture or code)
Clue sheets (strips of paper with pictures or codes that match the checkpoints)
Clothespins
Paper and pencils
Some schools purchase electronic timing equipment from SPORTident. That is completely optional, but both fun for the students and helpful for teachers to easily see that students are visiting the checkpoints in the correct order.
