Teaching Orienteering in the City
Orienteering education is a physically active learning experience that develops map reading and map navigation skills. In collaboration with school teachers, Navigation Games has created orienteering-based curricula that can be used everywhere, including in urban schools. Through our orienteering lessons, students develop self-awareness, observe and experience the environment, and gain confidence at navigating in both familiar and new places.
In this workshop we will play an outdoor team orienteering game using a map of the Holy Cross campus. We will introduce participants to our K-12 lesson plans.

Bringing Schoolchildren Outdoors with Orienteering (75 min)
How can we provide more opportunities for children from urban schools to experience the outdoors? Orienteering provides a structure to bring children outdoors not only on their school grounds, but also to nearby parks and more distant outdoor spaces. ...
In this workshop, we will describe the orienteering programs we’ve delivered in dense urban settings (Boston and Cambridge), share our orienteering curriculum that has been adopted as a standard part of the PE curriculum in Cambridge, and bring workshop participants outside to sample some fun navigation games at the conference venue (the YMCA at Estes Park).

Orienteering
Navigation Games and Cambridge Public Schools have collaborated to implement an orienteering curriculum in elementary schools. Come try out some of the activities from the 6-class unit. Orienteering is a map navigation sport. While it traditionally takes place in a forest or other wilderness area, it is increasingly popular in parks and urban settings. Learning orienteering teaches kids great life skills including spatial awareness, route planning, goal setting, collaboration to solve problems. You will come away with lesson plans and sample materials. While orienteering can be taught on a shoestring budget, we will share information about applying for grants to obtain maps, materials and consulting/coaching/co-teaching from Navigation Games.
