Boundary run, around checkpoints in the south. (Checkpoints are animal streamers). Perform different locomotor movements (chosen by PE teacher who is second in line). Freeze to check how well we are staying in single file as instructed.
Explore to find animal streamers; gather upon a signal. Count how many seconds to gather. Optionally, repeat to get faster and/or with different signals.
Star exercise: Discuss location of animals - volunters run and tag an animal and come back. Volunteers run and tag a short sequence of animals and come back. Use start/finish streamers/cones!
Animal-O: use clue sheet to do a course, in pairs; do it again (faster/smoother); do it again from memory. Repeat with other clue sheets if desired.
This will probably be skipped due to time constraints, but we can explain the idea. Start by 1:30 to do fully; start by 1:40 to explain. Geometric-O: animal-O; star exercise for animals; draw a map of the cones; fix & orient the teacher's map; teacher points to a cone and volunteers run there and back; teacher points to start - cone - finish & volunteers run there and back; teacher points to two cones in sequence and volunteers run there and back; hand out maps and orient them; go stand by #1 on your map with your map oriented. Go stand by #2 on your map with your map oriented. Run courses.
Start by 1:50. Look at the poster versions of the full-park maps. Discuss major features: the loop trail, the 3 entrances, the playground. Orient it.Â
Orienteering courses on the full maps (link to courses folder). With SPORTIdent. (Have them put the black strap on each finger stick.)
Start by 2:15. Wrap up: Discuss other games: score-O, poison score-O, disc-O, capture the flag O, ... Discuss which schools might like to do orienteering; challenges they see; what they like about it... Make sure we have their name & contact info.
