Community Consultations: Department of English, Languages, and Culture
Need to protect small classes, though the class size to achieve effective learning will vary by areas. Define what "small" means
Need to have better communications; there has been an erosion of faculty involvement in decision-making
The current procedures on policy development is inadequate. The 30-day consultation with no warning of what is coming and how it can impact faculty is not effecctive
Clear and unequivocal statement (in our value section) that we are an undergraduate teaching focused university -- that is our strength and that is what we will remain
If we are going to endorse high impact teaching practices, choose a couple only to emphasize. Among this group, the choice is Community Service Learning and Undergraduate Research
Stress that we adhere to values that include Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Transparency
Adopt a truly open budgeting process so people can understand better the reasons for strategies/decisions
Stress the need for a higher percentage of full-time professors. Right now, 59% of courses at MRU are taught by contract professors. This also means a higher service load on Full-time colleagues. In that respect, create a new category that can give some term-certains and fixed terms more stability. Could it be the rank of Lecturer
Produce a more robust array of courses for Spring (belief is that few students would want courses in summer)
Control the costs of managerial employment
Provide more meaningful administrative support so professors do not have to devote such a huge chunk if time on this -- like filling out expense reports
