In early January 2025, the Palisades Fire ignited near the Pacific Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles, rapidly expanding to encompass over 23,000 acres. Fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, the fire forced mandatory evacuations along sections of the Pacific Coast Highway and surrounding areas. The Westwood Recreation Center served as an emergency shelter for displaced residents.
The fire’s rapid spread led to immediate evacuation orders for residents of Santa Monica living north of San Vicente Boulevard. By January 8, the City of Malibu urged all remaining residents to evacuate as the uncontrolled fire approached. Evacuation orders were also issued for the Brentwood neighborhood in Los Angeles. Tragically, human remains were found in a destroyed house in Malibu during a welfare check.
As of January 28, the Palisades Fire has been confirmed to have destroyed 6,837 homes and other structures, and burned a total of 23,448 acres. Damage assessment teams are nearing completion of their inspections. The fire was reported to be 95% contained.
The Palisades Fire stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact wildfires can have on communities, underscoring the importance of preparedness and the resilience of those affected.
