THE MUSKETEER PERIOD: A NEW POSSIBLE STUDY PERIOD
Jameson Peck on January 29, 2025
Many schools are introducing a new study period to give students extra time for homework, tutoring, and personal organization. At Moorpark High School, a potential new study session called “Musketeer Period” is being considered. While this period could be a great opportunity for students, it also comes with some challenges.
One of the biggest positives is that students would have dedicated time during the school day to complete assignments, makeup tests/quizzes, and seek help from teachers. This could be especially beneficial for those with busy after-school schedules due to sports, clubs, or jobs. Instead of scrambling to finish homework late at night, students could use this time to get ahead on their work. Additionally, for students who struggle in certain subjects, this study period could provide valuable one-on-one or small-group help from teachers and peers.
Another advantage is the potential for reduced stress. Many students feel overwhelmed balancing schoolwork with other responsibilities. Having built-in study time could help alleviate some of this pressure by allowing them to manage their workload more efficiently. It could also encourage better study habits and time management skills, which are essential for success in both high school and future careers.
However, there are also some possible downsides. Not all students may use the time productively. Some might see it as just an extra break to socialize instead of focusing on their studies. If not properly structured, the study period could become a wasted opportunity. Additionally, for students who are already on top of their work, the extra time might feel unnecessary because they would have no work to complete.
Another challenge is scheduling. Adding additional minutes to the school day or taking time away from existing classes could create conflicts. If this period replaces another class or shortens instructional time, some students and teachers may feel that it negatively impacts their learning experience. This district would need to carefully plan how to fit the“Musketeer Period” into the day without sacrificing important learning time.
Scott Mangers, a math teacher here at the high school, says that the Musketeer Period would be implemented next year if it is successfully voted on. But, he also highlighted how many teachers have doubts that they wouldn’t be able to properly support their students if the study period wasn’t properly structured. Overall, he is excited to implement and test this period as it would hopefully positively impact learning here at Moorpark High.
Overall, the idea of a study period has strong benefits, particularly for students who need extra academic support or struggle with time management. However, its success would depend on how well it is structured and enforced. If implemented correctly, the “Musketeers Period” could become a valuable resource for students looking to stay on top of their work and reduce stress.
