In 1977, our founding Principal Mr Wee Heng Tin and the pioneer batch of teachers crafted TJC’s motto – ‘For College, For Nation’ – to be the clarion call for all TJCians to contribute to the college, the community and our nation. As the College continues to groom and nurture the thinkers, leaders and trailblazers of tomorrow, it takes pride in celebrating its rich and illustrious past, as well as reinventing itself to continue providing quality learning experiences for its students through Temasek Excellence.
Over the years, scores of TJCians have proudly flown the Temasek flag high, whether they are in public service, healthcare, the arts, the mathematical and scientific field, entrepreneurship … the list goes on. And many of these alumni have returned and contributed to their beloved alma mater, from giving talks, sharing their experiences, providing internships to mentoring their juniors.
Let’s meet some of these distinguished alumni who are truly trailblazers with a heart!

Assoc. Prof Dr Tan Lai Yong
Assoc. Prof Dr Tan Lai Yong is the Director of Outreach and Community Engagement at the College of Alice & Peter Tan (CAPT), National University of Singapore.
Upon returning to Singapore in 2010 after 15 years of rural medical service in Yunnan, China, Dr Tan is still going strong with his out-of-the-ordinary ideas to better society. To balance parental emphasis on education instead of relationship-building, Dr Tan started father-and-son football games. Another of his projects is the organisation of a fully foreign worker-starred concert featuring a Bangladeshi band, a PRC (People's Republic of China) choir and migrant worker Bollywood dancers with Singaporean teenagers helming the planning and administration.
Dr Tan was awarded the Friendship Award for Foreign Experts in Beijing, the Singapore International Foundation (SIF) Award presented by Mr Lee Hsien Loong and the 2005 Singapore MILK Fund (Mainly I Love Kids) Award for Outstanding Youth and Children’s Worker by President Nathan.
At 60, Dr Tan continues to work to better the communities he is blessed to be part of. With his students from CAPT, they have recently pioneered a small project to support female dependents of Bangladeshi workers in Singapore. The programme sends a bursary to female dependents who are back home in a university in Bangladesh – supporting the axiom that “if you educate a woman, you educate a family and a village”.
