Journalling

A great way for your brain to regulate emotions is to journal. Journaling can reduce emotions of stress and worry, it can boost your mood, enhance your sense of well-being and improve your working memory. There is not just one way to journal, everyone can do it in their own way.

Write down 3 goals you aim to achieve each morning

Your goals can be big or small, but make sure they are achievable! A goal could be to make someone else smile, to compliment someone else or to drink 8 glasses of water that day. These goals are specific to you. It should give you a sense of self-gratitude when you achieve them.

Write down 3 things you are grateful for each day.

These may be a variety of things, and some may seem a bit “extreme” but they are what YOU are grateful for, no one else. You may be grateful for your health, your family or even the fact that you get free education.

Write down 3 things you are stressed about in a day.

Try note these things down as soon as you think about them. Instead of having these stresses running around your head and letting your thoughts be scattered, journaling allows you to see all of your stresses on paper. Just simply ranting in a writing format instead of out loud can really help. All your stresses are in one place.

Write about your day. Write about your day to day life as specific as you’d like, much like a diary.

Scribble down what you eat, who you speak to, how you feel and so on and so forth. Get a small journal or notebook/diary so you can carry it about with you throughout your day.

Write something that you have learnt each day.

It is a well-known fact that you learn something new every day. Reflect on your learning at school, and out with school, by writing all these new facts into a journal or notebook.

Write down 3 things that made you smile.

This is another idea that is personal to you and only you. There are so many different things that make us happy. From saying good morning to a neighbour to hearing a funny joke, there is a huge variety of things that correspond to happiness. After you write them down, you can reflect on small moments that made you happy.

Make a list each day.

This can be a to do list or things you want to achieve that day. Whatever it is, writing a list can help give you a focus and a goal for the day.

Write down things that are annoying you.

This might be an argument you have had or something you have seen/something someone has said. If you write it down this can help you to calm down about the situation and can help you avoid getting into arguments. It can also help you get some perspective. Try writing it down every time something annoys you and then throw out the notebook at the end of the year to let go.
