Hours of Operation: The Learning Commons will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for students, parents, and staff. Staff members are welcome to use the learning commons before and after school hours. These hours of operation are subject to change during testing windows, district meetings, book fairs, etc. The LMS will notify the staff of closures via email or newsletter.
Students may visit the learning commons following morning announcements (approx 8:10 a.m.) each day until 3:00 p.m. Any changes in this schedule will be posted on the learning commons doors and emailed to teachers.
Classes: The Library Media Specialist (LMS) will arrange an orientation time for your students during the first or second week of school. Scheduled classes such as Kindergarten Story Time, STEAM lessons, or Digital Citizenship will be scheduled throughout the year and communicated to staff members.
Visiting the Learning Commons: Starting the 2025-26 school year, the learning commons will operate on a semi-flexible schedule for student and teacher checkouts. If you would like to schedule a time for your entire class to use the learning commons, please see the LMS to reserve a time.
When sending students to check out books, please send younger students in groups of two or three so that they can help each other. Please do not send more than three students at a time.
Reserved Books: Teachers may check out a collection of books for classroom use. Email a list of topics and/or titles to the LMS. Book requests will be filled and delivered within two school days. Please work with your teams to avoid conflict over book collections. Titles unavailable in the McGowen library may be outsourced to other MISD elementary libraries through interlibrary loans (ILL) service. See your LMS for these special requests. ILLs may take up to one week to arrive.
