Students must have a pass to go to the clinic (including lunch and recess). Emergency situations do not need a pass, but when a student is sent from the classroom a pass is required.
Students may not use the clinic’s phone without permission from the nurse.
Band-Aids, latex gloves, and clinic passes are in a zip-lock bag given to you at the beginning of the school year for your use in the classroom.
Illness
Notify the nurse if a parent reports of contagious illness including strep, influenza, conjunctivitis, head lice, etc. This data will allow for a prompt response and help the nurse with illness tracking.
Medication - Student:
With the exception of emergencies, the only school district employees authorized to administer medication to students are those designated by the principal.
Before medication can be administered, there must be a written request from the parent/guardian. All medication must be in its original bottle indicating the person for whom the medication is prescribed, the frequency, and the dosage.
Medication will not be administered to students unless it is in the original container. All medication, including aspirin, cough syrup, etc., which students must take are required to be submitted to the clinic or office before school begins.
Over-the-counter medications will only be administered by school personnel for 1 week and with written parent permission.
Inhalers
Some students need to carry an inhaler with them at all times. The nurse will notify you if this is the case for any of your students.
Medication - Faculty
If you bring medication to school, you must store it in a secure location. School personnel should not distribute over-the-counter medications (aspirin, etc.) to each other in the presence of students, nor should they takeany medication in the presence of students unless it is an emergency. Please notify the school nurse of any pertinent medical information.
Field trips
Please make sure you check the calendar with the campus secretary and administrator prior to scheduling a field trip date. This will proactively help us from overbooking field trips with previous scheduled events.
Please notify the nurse of a field trip as soon as it is scheduled. Send the nurse a reminder email the week before the field trip.
Nurse needs to contact parents two weeks before the field trip so the parent can make arrangements to attend if needed. If the parent can not attend, we are required to provide trained personnel for certain medical conditions. The nurse will need at least 2 weeks time to provide trained personnel (examples include diabetes, g-tube feed, catheterizations, etc).
Nurse will also need 2 weeks notice to collect medications needed for your grade-level's field trip.
Students needing medication during field trips will receive medication from their teacher. See the school nurse for more information. (See field trips under Table of Contents).
Food allergies
Some students in your class may have severe food allergies requiring special attention. The school nurse will notify you of this situation and specific guidelines you must follow.
Food at Classroom Parties
Send the nurse a copy of the parent permission slip with the list of ingredients one week prior to sending it home. Reminder-We are only allowed to serve one food item of non-nutritional value at a party and the non-nutritional food item can not be served during the students' breakfast or lunch time. See Videos/Parties in Table of Contents.
Body Fluids
See MISD Employee Handbook & MISD Compliance Training
Teachers/staff/other students should not touch any body fluids without following proper handling instructions (gloves are provided in each safety bag).
Accidents
Report any teacher/student accident to the nurse and an administrator.
If you have an accident on school property, the nurse can explain the Workman's Compensation paperwork. Do not delay in reporting an accident.
See MISD Employee Handbook for further explanation.
Workers Compensation
Notify nurse and administration immediately if you get injured while at work. It is important for the required Workers Compensation forms to be completed immediately in order to receive coverage.
