At McGowen, students are expected to follow the MISD Student Code of Conduct. Teachers and Staff reinforce Positive Behavior Interventions & Support, or PBIS. PBIS is an approach in behavior management on a school-wide level, in a specific setting such as the playground, halls, cafeteria, bathrooms, the classroom, or with an individual student. As a campus, we have developed common expectations for how MAVS LIVE KIND in our common areas. Teachers are expected to teach and reinforce MAVS LIVE KIND expectations throughout the year. The ultimate goal is to increase student academic performance, decrease problem behavior, increase safety, and establish positive school climates through research-based strategies and systems.

Daily Check in: Teachers should check in daily with students. Teachers can use Zones of Regulation, 5,4,3,2,1, Feelings Poster etc. Administrators will provide a bank of resources for teachers to choose from during the Academy week. RP resources will be available in the McGowen General Google Folder.
RP Circle every Friday Following Announcements: It is a campus expectation that each teacher does a Restorative Practice Circle every Friday following morning announcements. Announcements on Friday will be kept short to allow time for the classroom circle. In order to establish consistency and structures school-wide, the Administrators/Counselor will provide the RP topics for the first 2 weeks of school. After the first two weeks, the Restorative Practices circle topics can be decided by the classroom teacher or grade level team. Resources for topics can be found in the teacher resource book titled: Circle Forward.
Respect Agreements Established & Posted : All teachers will establish the respect agreements and post them in their classroom by the end of September.
Restorative Practice Questions: Teachers will be given a handout of the RP questions aligned to Restorative Practices. These questions should be utilized when discussing behavior with students.
Restorative Chats: Teachers can lead small group Restorative Chats or request a Restorative Chat meeting with an administrator or counselor.
