Managing big emotions
Improving the emotional resilience and wellbeing of our pupils means equipping them with strategies they need to cope with everyday life events and interact appropriately with the world around them. It became clear during nurture group assessments, observations and analysing the school behaviour tracking system that some of our pupils lacked the necessary coping strategies needed, resulting in negative behaviours both in school and in the community
The wellbeing staff support pupils by offering weekly individual and group sessions looking at anger management issues and coping strategies.
Referrals are through the Wellbeing Manager who liaises with families and outside agencies.
Pupils follow a planned programme of intervention looking at positive solutions and coping strategies which they can use in school, at home and in the community.
Through a variety of tasks such as role play, art, board games, worksheets and discussions, pupils can identify anger as an emotion, outline the causes of anger and show how it can be controlled. Pupils also examine the effects anger has on their life.
Pupils also explore the vocabulary needed to express themselves without resorting to anger.
