We are school for children aged 11-19 with complex learning difficulties including: autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), moderate to severe learning difficulties, physical difficulties and Behaviour, Emotional & Social difficulties (BESD).

We support our learners' development in becoming ethically informed citizens of Wales and the wider world and become effective members of society.

Everyone gets to be in a small class where there are lots of staff to help you.
You will get lessons in reading & spelling at least once per week where you will have different ways to improve and practice your spelling and reading.
Everyone can get help with their reading, spelling, writing and numeracy with the help of Miss Beasley and Mrs Evans.
Everyone gets to use the Doodle apps to help with literacy, numeracy and spelling
You will all be tested at least twice per year with your reading, reading comprehension, spelling and numeracy so we can set targets to help you to improve your literacy and numeracy skills.
Your teachers will work on your literacy, numeracy and digital skills across all lessons while you will all have weekly literacy and numeracy lessons where you can work on your literacy and numeracy targets
Everyone in KS3 has access to the curriculum for Wales! We have made avatars to help us remember, and use the four core purposes! We want to be ambitious like Ambitious Alex, enterprising like Enterprising Ellie, Healthy like Healthy Harri and ethical like Ethical Enfys. We will learn in six main areas: Literacy, languages and communication; mathematics and numeracy; science & technology; humanities; expressive arts; health & wellbeing while we will learn about the cross-cutting themes of Wales and the wider world, relationships and sexuality education (RSE), Careers and the world of work and children’s rights.
Everyone gets to have a say about what they want to learn. This is called an immersion morning!
Everyone has an All About Me profile that tells other people all about us. These are important because they tell the adults how to support me best.
Everyone gets the chance to gain qualifications matched to their ability and interests to help us you to learn a variety of new ideas and skills that will help you when you are older! You can access qualifications in maths, English, science, IT and lots of vocational and life skills qualifications in things like Hair & beauty, mechanics and construction.
Teachers will break down tasks into manageable ‘chunks’ for while ensuring that verbal/written instructions are broken down into 2 sentences or less using 2 syllable/more familiar word words especially when you’re working on a new idea or skill for the first time. Staff will ask you to repeat back instructions to ensure that you’ve understood the task.
Sometimes we can miss days in school for a lot of different reasons. Everyone has access to staff who can help up to “catch up”.
Everyone has access to Miss Ingram who will help us to find work placements, apprenticeships and college places when it’s time for us to leave Maesgwyn.
All learners will receive a timetable to ‘map’ out their day
Each class has a class LSA who will be with the class for most of the day. The LSA will understand your learning and wellbeing needs.

Everyone has a Motional assessment that lets adults know how to support us best.
If things are hard or people are struggling to manage their emotions, everyone can work with the wellbeing team. The wellbeing team supports everyone! The wellbeing team are, Miss Dando, Miss Marshman, Miss Samuel, Miss Selwyn, Mrs Bowen, Miss Owens, Mr Richards and Mr Jones.
Everyone has access to ELSA, Forest Schools, Play, Animal Care, Relax Kids, Nurture Group, Check –In-Check-Out, and other interventions that support social, emotional and behavioural issues that we may have.
Everyone has access to Amy, our Eye-to-Eye counsellor. She helps us when things are tough.
Everyone has access to our R&R provision (Reset & reflect). Here you can have one-to-one support who will use the most suitable strategy to support you (e.g. quiet time; reflection sheets; incident review; calming techniques etc).
Everyone takes part in Regulation time and Reflection time. In Regulation time we discuss how we are feeling and learn how to regulate our emotions. In Reflection time we get the chance to reflect on our day and think about strategies that can help us tomorrow.
Everyone has the chance the chat with an emotionally available adult who can help us when we are struggling. The adults in Maesgwyn always have time to chat.
All staff are fully trained in behaviour, well-being and mental health support and will use lot of different ways to help you through your day. These include: distraction & diversion; access to emotionally available adults; support strategies; understanding and preventing triggers; post-incident learning.
The school will use a traffic light system to track your progress during the day. This may be used as a discussion point in reflection time and, if needed, to set targets for the following day.
Everyone can have a visual timetable or a social story to help you throughout the day.
All of you will have access to the weekly reward sessions
Everyone can have personalised reward cards and communication charts if it will help them feel safe and secure throughout the day.
All of you will have access to the sensory room.
All of you will take part in the weekly celebration assemblies where we award certificates for excellent effort and progression.
Everyone has access to support from professional agencies such as attendance and wellbeing, youth engagement and participation service, youth offending service, educational psychologist, Miskin and disabled children’s team.
