School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge healthcare and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors February 2017.

The professional organization for school nurses is NASN.
School Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice (ANA & NASN 2022) This publication describes and delineates the expectations and parameters of the professional role of the U.S. school nurse across all practice settings by detailing the activities, accountability, competencies-the expected professional levels that integrate knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgement- education and professional development, and other key school nursing traits and qualifications.
