Each employee has received a small informational card from Human Resources to follow when an employee is injured at work. Information can also be found on the HR Workmen’s Compensation Website.
If an employee has sustained a work-related injury that is not life, limb or eyesight threatening, call the Nurse Triage service and speak with a TravCARE nurse at (888) 729-4189. Injuries should be reported promptly.
MMSD does not cover liability insurance for Nurse/Nurse Assistant when assessing and/or treating a staff member. See information below on steps to follow if a staff member comes to the health office.
For an injury, always have them call Traveler’s (800) 832-7839, their Insurance Provider, and notify their supervisor.
Do not offer treatment advice for illness or chronic conditions, always encourage staff to call their provider for questions and/or see medical care.
Nurse/Nurse Assistant should encourage employees with potential blood or body fluid exposure to wash the area with soap and water and to rinse well but should not offer any other treatment advise.
Nurse/Nurse Assistant can offer emotional and supportive treatment such as cleaning of wound, band-aid, and ice. (Some health offices have developed a self-care area for staff which includes bandaids, ice, etc).
If the Nurse/Nurse Assistant believes that the injury warrants a 911 call, then that call should be made, and staff will provide support as needed.
Nurse/Nurse Assistant should not be taking blood pressures for staff unless it is an emergency. Blood pressure checks should be done at the clinic.
The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has a BBP Exposure Control Plan. The plan provides the information that employees need to limit and prevent exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials at work. A copy of this plan is in each building in the district in both the main office and health office.
All new employees (including substitutes) are strongly encouraged to obtain BBP training as soon as possible after employment starts.
Complete the online Bloodborne Pathogens Training. This training takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and should be completed during the school day when the school nurse is available to answer questions.
Following the presentation you must complete a 5 question quiz. At least 4 of the 5 questions must be answered correctly to pass.
After completing the training, you will be taken to the Documentation of Completed Training screen. Enter this email address to receive credit for completing the training: training@madison.k12.wi.us. MMSD Human Resources is mailed the confirmation of completing the BBP training. You can view your record through the Talent Portal.
It is recommended that employees in a job category specifically identified as having occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens obtain BBP training annually AND receive the Hepatitis B vaccine series (3 shots) OR formally decline (in writing) the vaccine. The vaccinations are provided by the District at no cost.
