Miro's Surrealist Figures

Miro's Surrealist Figures

Joan Miró was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. His style of painting is known as surrealism.

What is Surrealism? Watch the video below for an explanation but basically it's 'anything that tries to break free of plain old reality with a little wildness, weirdness and joy!' It's another type of abstract art.

After the video, look through the slides to see examples of Miro's work. Then scroll down to our lesson video to create your own Miro-Inspired Surrealist Figures!

What is Surrealism?

This brief video from Tate Kids gives us a short, fun description of surrealism.

Next, scroll through the Miro images below to see some examples of Miro's before doing our lesson.

And now to our lesson...

This project, inspired by Miro's art, uses lots of different lines and shapes to create surrealist characters.

You'll need paper and pencil, a black Sharpie marker and colors. In my example, I used markers for the color but crayons are great too. Just remember to use bright, bold colors.

I left the background white in this first video. If you want to add color to the background, watch the next video for some suggestions.

Background!

In this video we will explore some different ideas for filling the background with color.

Enjoy!
