Inspired by Joseph Amedokpo...

Joseph Amedokpo (b 19460 is an artist from Togo, a small country in West Africa close to Ghana and Nigeria.

His art is full of bright color, lines, abstract shapes and designs.

The themes of his artwork are often based on African traditions and culture.

There are two videos below for our lesson inspired by the work of Joseph Amedokpo. We will be using different types of line and shapes to create patterns, variety and unity in our work.

This lesson should take between 60-120 minutes to complete.

The lesson - part 1

The first part of the lesson will use different types of line to create your design.

You will need white paper and a Sharpie or other black marker. You can use pencil if you prefer but you will need to trace over all your pencil lines with the black marker.

Follow along with the step by step instructions to begin with, pausing the video if you need more time for any of the steps. Take your time - think about your lines. No scribble lines! If you're stuck for ideas in an area of your design, move onto another area then come back - you might have some inspiration.

You can also look at the line example paper in the video for ideas.

The lesson - part 2

Before you begin the second part of the lesson, all your lines should be complete, creating variety in your design.

Part 2 is color. To add color, you can use crayons, colored pencils or watercolor paints. Markers are not a good choice as the more intense color of the marker does not contrast as well with the black marker used for the lines.

If you choose to use paint, make sure you have used a waterproof black marker, like a Sharpie.

Choose a color scheme - warm color, cool colors or a color scheme of your choice - and fill the white space with color
