Line -
An Element of Art

Our line lesson...

This lesson will focus on LINE - one of our Elements of Art.

The Elements of Art are the 'building blocks' we learn about and use to create art, like letters are the building blocks of reading.

First, watch this short video for an overview of line and different types of line.

Then scroll down to the 3 short videos for the lesson.

Line lesson part 1 - practicing our lines

For the first part of our lesson, you'll need a piece of paper and something to write/draw with. This is purely practice so if you do a line you don't like, just try again or move on to another one

Line lesson part 2 - using our lines

For this step, you will need your crayons or oil pastels - not markers - and a piece of paper. If you have some art paper, that will be better. The final step will be paint which is why crayons not markers are used. You can use a pencil for our first step - the long curved line - then trace over with the black crayon.

Line lesson part 3 - filling with color

We will be using watercolor paints to fill the entire paper with color. If you do not have paint, you can use crayons lightly and carefully so the lines will not be covered.

If using paint, watercolor is important as we will be using the resist technique so that the lines will come up through the transparent watercolor paint.

Paintbrush and a paper towel are also needed.
