Sandra Silberzweig

Sandra Silberzweig is a contemporary Canadian artist. Contemporary artist means that she is alive and currently creating art.

About her art, Sandra says "I have developed a product with the intent to inspire personal creativity in people of all ages" - thats' cool!

For this lesson, we will create an abstract portrait using the work of Sandra Silberzweig as inspiration. In her portraits, Silberzweig uses vibrant color combined with lines, patterns, symbols and asymmetry, creating variety in each invidiual portrait.

Take a look at the images to the left and below before we begin the project, paying particular attention to the use of line and pattern.

Our lesson...

For this project, you'll need white paper and pencil. You'll also need a black marker, Sharpie or regular marker is fine. For adding color, use whatever supplies you have available but be sure to keep your work bright and colorful. In the video, I'll talk about materials for color but even simple crayons can be really beautiful.

The drawing is simple. What makes Silberzweig's work effective is her use of color, line and pattern. She uses different type of lines and pattern throughout her portraits creating variety which makes her work more interesting.

Think about different types of lines and patterns that you can use in your work - make it interesting! Your lines can create shapes which can be abstract or can be familiar, like leaves or... whatever your creativity choses.
