One of the biggest reasons students fall behind in math is not seeking help. Math concepts build on each other, so it’s important to ask questions as soon as confusion begins.
Ask clarifying questions during or after class
Use available resources (notes, homework, videos, tutorials, teachers, classmates, parents, tutors)
Understand that others likely have the same questions
Take advantage of Raider Time or before school to ask questions if they’re uncomfortable asking during class
Watching someone solve a problem is not the same as doing it yourself. Many students struggle because they don’t complete their homework—or rush through it without understanding.
Take complete notes in class
Practice every day by completing homework on time
Put real effort into every assignment
Embrace mistakes as part of learning
Work through extra problems when needed to fully understand a topic
Know that math, like a sport or instrument, improves with consistent practice
Math builds over time. Struggles can come from missed school, lack of focus, or learning differences.
At BCMS, we use IXL to help close learning gaps. These lessons are assigned based on your individual needs and show your growth throughout the year.
Complete all assigned IXL lessons each quarter
Go above the minimum to grow even more
Take responsibility for reviewing weak areas and asking for extra support when needed
Math takes focus—especially during multi-step problems. Distractions can lead to missed steps and confusion.
Stay engaged by participating, asking questions, and taking notes
Recognize when they’re distracted and ask to move if needed
Understand that where they sit and how they behave affects how well they learn
Students with a 504 or IEP will continue to receive support based on their individual accommodations and learning plans.
