LBImpactS Week Project Report

Making an impact, locally and globally!

LBImpactS aims at fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness among individuals within the school community and beyond while striving to inspire innovative and holistic learners who are able to overcome challenges in a fast-changing world.

 LBImpactS Week is envisioned as:

A week when students, teachers, and parents collaborate to do something which positively impacts the school, Mauritius, or the world. The impact may be environmental or social.

A week consisting of varied initiatives, depending upon the inspiration and passion of school community members.

A week which develops skill sets for applying what is learned in class to enact change, underscoring the value of learning.

A week where Bocage community members are inspired to lead initiatives. They put into practice the mission statement through principled initiatives, collaboratively led to meet the needs of the communities they are citizens of.

This week the mission of LBIS comes to life, through the principled leadership of our students.

Impact Week Projects

The following projects were the various ways LBIS impacted our community during LBImpactS Week. Follow the links to view the description, some images from the week, and reflections shared by the students participants.

At the heart of this campaign is the effort to get to know and understand those living in the area and what might be done to lessen the impact of our school traffic and/or improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.

The Mauritian beaches and rivers need our help!  This project is a volunteer effort to remove trash from local waterways, beaches, lakes and rivers.

Impact 13 includes creating a butterfly garden featuring endemic plants. A portion of the project includes collaboration with Clavis regarding the location, maintenance, and educational value of an on-campus butterfly garden. A visit to a local beekeeper as well as La Vanille to learn about pollinators is part of the project fun!

Nature lovers and those who are curious about mysterious flora and fauna hidden in a deep forest  on a volcanic cliff are making a change!  Promoting health and wellbeing to generations of students,  providing an outdoor nature lab and restoring a place for learning and exploring biodiversity.

Impact 5 is all about planning, designing and budgeting a zen communal hangout area for the students. The venue allocated for this communal area is the green space in front of the Physics Lab, next to the giant chess board.

A week-long workshop to learn the basics of cooking plus something extraordinary! The focus: How food is a community builder, with an end product of hosting a gathering with food prepared by the students.

Using Miyawaki's method, environmentally passionate students who are willing to get their hands dirty, create a Tiny Forest on a plot of land in St Pierre with 300 endemic plants!

A fiesta of painting, designing, cutting and washing tyres and sewing cushions to make our furry friends more comfortable in their very own customised "donut themed" pet beds!

Utilizing Prezi, videos are created about DP subjects with relevant information so that future F5s can better choose their subjects. The overviews are from the student's POV!

A hands-on experience with conservation of endemic flora and fauna. Students learn the basic methods for propagation, how to mix soil and weeding.  Aviary work, snail research and assisting with the ongoing healthcare maintenance of the giant tortoises included.

Students conduct an environmental review of the school campus based on the 10 Eco School themes (biodiversity and nature, climate change, energy, food, global citizenship, health and wellbeing, marine coasts, litter, etc).

Students enjoy the power of dance to spread happiness and a sense of unity! A team of students, teachers and parents organize a dance flashmob that includes songs from diverse styles and cultures.

Project 13 involves planning, designing and revamping our original greenhouse. The renovated greenhouse will provide a protected area that allows students and teachers to explore different modes of farming.

The arts of Mandala, Rangoli and Henna are explored. The project involves creating mandala designs that are  transferred on tote bags in order to enforce the ‘no bag' policy in Mauritius. Included in this LBImpactS project is time to share the arts with the students at Clavis.

Through hiking, we get in touch with the environment while demonstrating our involvement in sustaining it. The aim of project 15  is to clean up the litter in our surrounding environment through daily hiking excursions (also known as "plogging").

Mapping debris on the lagoon floor, then cleaning up what is found! This LBImpactS project is also connected to Project Aware and the International Coastal Cleanup.

Le Bocage International School's personal Art Gallery that exhibits students artworks. The gallery incorporates the Art movement timeline to show how over time art evolved and where are we today.

Planning the 10km LBIS trail run is a unique opportunity for participants to venture into the great outdoors while pushing their physical limits and their creative minds beyond their limits.

Impact 19

LGBTQ+

Impact 19 involves creative and purposeful sessions to help the LGBTQ+ community at school. I19 promotes inclusiveness, allyship, better learning and awareness!

A week-long crash course in Mauritian sign language providing us with a way to communicate with those in the hard-of-hearing community.

Researching medicinal herbs endemic to Mauritius, designing, and planting a garden at school is what this incredible project is all about! The garden includes information regarding the historic use of each of the herbs in Mauritius.

Impact 22

Mural: I Can

Painting 5 murals in just one week? YES WE CAN FOR I CAN! I CAN is a Special Needs School located in Beau Bassin. Completing the mural paintings and giving the new school premises a fresh-new look is just one of the many facets of our connection with this incredible school.

Designing and building mini-lending libraries to place near schools and in neighbourhoods is the goal of the neighbourhood lending library. Included is the communication of the concept to the community.

Impact 24

Restoring the petanque court on campus, targeting areas to improve, such as the addition of signage for sharing rules, a means of keeping score, etc. In addition, restoring and restocking the pond on campus, and including  sustainable and endemic flora and fauna.

Creatively manufacturing an E-newspaper regarding global and local issues. Showcasing student talents and perspectives to the Bocage world and beyond!

Aspiring entrepreneurs from around Bocage pitch their business models to a panel of "investors" (teachers and various community members)! Students are proposed with a design challenge to meet a need, then given the week to prepare a solution and present it.

Impact 32

Cheshire Home

Participants plan and organise fun and engaging activities for the Cheshire Home residents. Puzzles, cards, dominoes, grooming, arts and crafts and much more. Students also painted the residents' lounge and created a vegetable garden for the Home.
