Description of the Project: The aim of this project was to set up a medicinal herb garden that will help to create awareness about the different local plants that can be used for medicinal purposes (for treatment and prevention). A spot was identified by the team and the area had to be levelled and worked upon so that the garden could be set up. The team did research about the benefits of the plants and the environmental requirements for each. An alumini was invited to talk about the benefits of various local plants and plants were gathered from the community. The team decided to take on a challenge of making pots using used palettes. There was much critical and creative thinking in the setting up of the garden. The students got the opportunity of interacting with students of other form classes. The completion of the garden is evidence to their good collaboration skills. The team contributed to two major SDGs during the Impacts week, SDG3 (Good health and well being) and SDG15 (Life on land).
No. of Participants: The team consisted of 17 members: 2 teachers and 15 students (Form 3-7), 2 of which were co-leaders.

Participant reflection
Aim of being part of this project:
I aim to contribute to the succession of making a garden capable and suitable to growing various medicinal herbs.
I also wish to increase my knowledge on the subject for possible future uses that may prove useful with what I learn across this experience.
Additionally I aim to improve my gardening skills in order to possible use it for a personal garden, possible in the near future.
What am I good at in terms of skills? [Hint: D&T skills/gardening/research/presenting information and formatting etc)
Wood working
Designing
Manual labor
Child labour
How IB Learner Profile traits I hope to develop during the impacts week through this project?
I wish to develop my communication, collaboration and thinking skills through the group work required to achieve this ambitious project. As such, i also hope to develop my “principle” and”open-thinker” traits as i interact with my group members and we coordinate ourselves in order to each do a part in the project.
What should the medicinal garden ideally have/look like?
It should have a broad and varied collection of medicinal herbs, useful and applicable to various situational uses. Additionally, the garden should be easily accessible, maintainable and have easily distinguishable plant-growing sections in order to easily collect the needed plants to one inexperienced with the identification of the species.
What traits should one have to collaborate successfully in the completion of this project?
Communication
Collaboration
Wood working
Gardening
Resourcefulness
Daily reflection sheet
Goal for the day
To clean and level the gardening area/To start the construction of the wooden pots, using the pallets
What did you EXPLORE today?
We explored various techniques used in the maintenance and preparations of land as well as aspects of woodworking and land leveling
What discussions took place?
We discussed the design and construction process of the wooden pots, made from pallets.Additionally, we also discussed the proper techniques used to level and clean the gardening sector, using common hand tools and techniques.
What skills have you been able to develop?
I managed to developed my gardening and land leveling skills by making use of h yh e techniques discussed, taught to us by the school gardener
At what points did you collaborate to make collective decisions?
Collective discussions were made when discussing the area to be cleaned as well as the design and construction process of the wooden pots. Collaborative discussions were also made when constructing our schedule and design process
What have you learned today?
I’ve learnt how to clean and level sloped and uneven ground
Daily reflection sheet
Goal for the day
To finish the construction of the final pallet pot and clean the gardening area
What did you EXPLORE today?
I explored various techniques used in rapid and efficient improvisation and implementation of design changes based on obstacles during the construction phase of a design as well as land cleaning techniques.
What discussions took place?
We discussed how to make up for obstacles we came upon during the construction of our pots as well as how and where to clean the gardening area in order to make it cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing
What skills have you been able to develop?
I managed to develop my teamwork/collaborative, woodworking and land work skills
At what points did you collaborate to make collective decisions?
Collective discussions were made when discussing the design changes to be made to the pallet design when we came upon an obstacle in the construction of the pallet. Collective decisions were also made when discussing where and how to clean the gardening area
What have you learned today?
I’ve learnt land cleaning techniques
Daily reflection sheet
Goal for the day
To construct two pallet pots
What did you EXPLORE today?
I explored various collaborative techniques to aid in the construction of the pots, improving our team-work as we coordinated with each other in order to be as efficient as possible.
What discussions took place?
We discussed the design and construction process of the wooden pots; deciding where to make specific incisions to the pellets with the hope of using some of its pre-made attachments rather than harvesting all of its resources and starting from scratch, potentially saving us a lot of time.
What skills have you been able to develop?
I managed to develop my teamwork/collaborative and wood working skills
At what points did you collaborate to make collective decisions?
Collective discussions were made when discussing the construction design, process and group work required to make the pots.
What have you learned today?
I’ve learnt how to make proper use of screws and nails on wooden designs based on their individual function in managing the stress of a design
