Description of the Project: A collaboration between external persons and Le Bocage to clean the debris from the Trou Aux Biches lagoon. The students were divided into two main groups: 'divers’ and ‘non divers'.
The divers were able to spend in excess of 45 minutes on three consecutive days at depths to collect ocean debris, including two broken fishing traps, lines and net, while also admiring different species in their natural habitat. On day one, they were even able to rescue a crab, which had been entangled in a scrap of fishing net and a coral.
The non divers were given the opportunity to survey the reef to see the condition of the corals as well as observing any debris that was entrapped within it. They were also able to snorkel to remove some of the debris that they found; which included an additional fishing trap and a tyre. They were also able to participate in other activities such as paddle boarding and kayaking.
The debris was then weighed and disposed of accordingly. In total over 71 kg of debris was removed from the Lagoon over the three days that we were on site.
