Description of the Project: Our prior goal was to paint 3 murals for the I CAN Special Need School but ended up being 5 murals in all. The team was excited to complete the mural painting at Beau Bassin the whole week.
On the first day, we went to the NGO to visit the kids and get to know them a little more. We finalised the drawing on paper, did research and used online designing tools for the designing and the team did practice the lettering. After the final mural design was complete, the team painted the walls in white where necessary and the image was transferred to the wall. Students traced the outlines from the drawing onto the wall and began the painting process.
These collaborative murals were a great way for the students to learn and develop creativity, arithmetics, as well as working together, all while using a few different methods of painting. The team all enjoy the freedom of creating an abstract artwork as they can explore the materials without that much restriction.
As the first layers of paint were applied, the mural started to take shape, and students began to get excited about seeing their ideas, sketches, and designs come to life. With each new color and layer of paint, the mural came together. The completion of all murals was celebrated with the cleanup of the school and afterwards we enjoyed some food and good music.
Seeing those happy faces of the students from I CAN, when they saw the murals was the best part of the project.
