Description of the Project:
Signs are to my eyes what words are to your ears!
Learning the Mauritian Sign Language is perhaps most importantly to introduce you to the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community, which has a rich history and important culture of its own. It provides you with a way to communicate with those in that community, wherever you may encounter them. Embracing diversity in all its forms is a lesson that’s always worth including. Apart from creating awareness within the LBIS community it may also allow students to explore and develop their creativity around communicating in another different and unique way, using the Mauritius Sign Language.
Le Bocage International School held a week of projects aiming to create a positive impact on our community, called "LBImpactS".During the first week of June, (30th May -3rd June) activities were held between students, leaders, co-leaders and external guests to aid in learning Mauritian Sign Language. It provided us with a way to communicate with those in the hard-of-hearing community. Through this, awareness was created as well as appreciation of differences amongst people in the community. The goals are to create a video montage of the whole learning experience, to establish a network communication for future partnerships and to create a poster of the LBIS students signing the alphabet was achieved.
No. of Participants: We were a total of 17 participants with 3 Form 7 student leaders and a mixed group of Forms 1, 2 and 3 students and 2 teacher facilitators. The heterogenous nature of the group made this both challenging and exciting to initiate contact, establish rapport and collaborate collectively in making this project happen!
