Permaculture

Description of the project: This project is on Permaculture and Gardening with the main focus on sustainable agriculture. Permaculture is an holistic approach to land use design, based on ecological principles and patterns. Permaculture aims to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with people. The ecological processes of plants, animals, water, weather and nutrient cycles are integrated with human needs and technologies for food, energy, shelter and infrastructure

The students had to explore the different types of agriculture and if it can be implemented in the school. They went to visit different greenhouses and hydroponics facilities. They had the chance to visit a vertical farm and attend a talk on its benefits, water and fertilizers management system as well as the opportunity to plant some trees. Insects and wildlife are an important part of a permaculture design. Without them the design will not be complete and the forces will not be in balance. The students visited a beehive and learnt about beekeeping and hive management. They have also spent a day in a farm where they learnt and practised a highly effective technique which is the creation of permanent growing beds separated by access paths. These raised beds provide control over the health of the soil in which plants are grown. Hence it will create a deep, wide growing area that encourages plant roots to grow down and outward. The students were also involved in the cleaning up of the area near the greenhouse set up near the Junior Lab and used worn-out tyres for planting trees.

The main focus of this project was to promote the UN sustainable Development Goal and Permaculture remarkably supports all of these 17 SDGs and directly contributes to 13 of them.
