Core courses are to be taken in order.
Since some students have already taken English 1 Honors and maybe English 2 Honors and/or Algebra 1 Honors and maybe Geometry Honors in middle school, they will now take either English 2 CP or English 2 Honors; English 3 CP or English 3 Honors with or without AP Language and Composition; and Geometry with Statistics CP or Geometry with Statistics Honors; Algebra 2 with Probability CP or Algebra 2 with Probability Honors.
Honors and AP classes will be more challenging.
Anyone up to the challenge may take honors and/or AP classes.
Refer to this video to understand the difference between AP and Dual Enrollment. DE cannot be started until AFTER the successful completion of your sophomore year. There is always a fall AP/DE night that anyone can attend.
Elective classes must be taken in order. Even if you took an advanced class in middle school, you must start at level 1 in high school.
All classes open to Freshmen are listed on the ILHS Course Selections- Rising Freshmen sheet.
To be clear, freshmen need a total of 8 classes (4 each semester- you will not know which courses you actually get and which semester they will be in until the official schedules are released). Please have your 8 classes ready to give your counselor during the IGP meeting. You then need an additional 4 alternate electives to provide to your counselor. Use the worksheet to choose your classes and have them ready to share with your counselor during your IGP meeting.
Attention Athletes: All students NEED a minimum of 3 full credits per semester in senior year (and 4 full credits per semester every other year),
so if you fail or drop any class that would put you under those 3 full credits,
you will become ineligible to play your sport. Eligibility is determined based on the previous semester to when you start the sport.
We encourage you to take at least 4 credits to give yourself a buffer.
Do not forget to pay attention to NCAA requirements as well.
Also keep in mind that colleges like to see that all students have a full schedule senior year.
All Rising Freshmen need 8 classes total and 4 alternate electives. What classifies as an elective?
All ILHS CTE courses on the front can be used an main electives or alternate electives, they just have to be taken in order
The LCCC CTE courses on the top back can be main electives, but not alternate electives- pay attention to grade level- some have entrance exams- they need to be taken in order (2024 entrance exams = Cosmetology, EMS, Welding, Culinary Arts)- all LCCC courses will be double blocked next year, so if you request for them, know that they will take up 2 of your 8 courses
Under the ILHS Core Classes and Non-CTE Electives on the back, the following courses can be used as main electives or alternate electives
any class in the General Electives box
in the History box- AP Euro, AP World, AP Psych, psychology, sociology, or law education
any class in the Band, Performing Arts, Art, or PE boxes
What is an IGP meeting? In South Carolina, an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) meeting is a conference between a student, their counselor, and their parents or guardian. The meeting helps students plan their education and career path. The purpose is to review academic progress, career interests, and educational goals; discuss course selections for the next school year; help students align high school courses with college entrance requirements; and prepare a career major for high school and beyond.
