River Pathway
Canterbury Class has started a fantastic new initiative this term as part of our English Speaking and Listening lessons, designed to build confidence and communication skills.
Every Tuesday afternoon, one pupil gets to take charge and become the class expert! They give a presentation on a topic of their interest, followed by a formal Question and Answer (Q&A) session where they host questions from their peers and staff.
We have already learned so much from these student-led sessions. So far, the class has explored the many types of Pokémon, the fascinating History of Nintendo Games, the life of Alexander Hamilton, and lots more! This is a wonderful way for pupils to show off their knowledge and develop essential public speaking skills.
We look forward to seeing who takes the presenter chair next week!
NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH!
Canterbury Class is excited to launch our Christmas Hot Chocolate Stirrers! We've been very busy entrepreneurs, creating mock-up stirrers and perfecting our recipe through careful taste and smell testing. Next, we applied our maths statistics skills to conduct crucial market research. We used surveys and tallying to determine the ideal customer price and to see if customers prefer our stirrers over traditional hot chocolate. We then worked hard using our maths (statistics and data) skills to clearly present all our valuable data using accurate tally charts, pictograms, and bar charts! These will be available to buy in December!
We're excited to let you know that Module 2 is officially underway, and it's going to be a busy and festive one! Our students will be diving into a range of exciting projects and key academic areas.
Business Enterprise and Christmas Craft Fairs
A major focus this module is our Christmas Craft Fairs! Our students are turning their product ideas into reality by:
Making their products (Hot chocolate stirrers, personalized glasses, and a range of festive decorations).
Advertising their creations.
Pricing their goods to prepare for sale.
This hands-on work is a fantastic way for students to develop business enterprise skills from production to promotion. We will keep you posted with the specific Craft Fair dates so you can come along and support their hard work!
Academic Focus
In addition to our enterprise activities, we'll be concentrating on core academic skills:
Maths: We are starting our journey into multiplication and division. Students will be learning how to apply these essential skills and will use manipulatives (physical tools) to build a strong understanding. This is all working towards their functional skills exams.
English: A brand new text will be introduced this module. We look forward to exploring a new narrative and developing their reading and writing skills.
Canterbury Class has had an incredibly busy and creative week as we dive deeper into our new Business Enterprise project. The air in our classroom has been full of focus and collaboration as the pupils work hard to develop their marketable products!
This week, our learning has been very hands-on, focusing on developing new crafting skills to bring our design ideas to life:
Pom-Pom Power: Pupils successfully mastered the art of making fluffy, vibrant pom-poms. This skill will be key for decorative elements in several of our product lines.
Natural Wreaths: We explored how to create beautiful, sustainable wreaths using natural materials. The children learned how to safely and effectively use simple tools to assemble and decorate the frames, giving them real practical construction skills.
Bauble Brainstorm: We dedicated time to designing and planning a range of unique festive baubles. The class looked at different materials, colours, and decorative techniques to ensure we have a varied and appealing product selection.
This week, students were focusing on their speaking and listening skills. Canterbury class were tasked with creating a presenation on an interest of theirs. Students are presenting every Tuesday afternoon, and the presentations so far have been fantastic! Pupils were eloquent with their delivery, were able to think of fantastic and relevant questions to ask. Great job!
02/10/25
Today, students worked together brilliantly to make and prepare two delicious homemade dips: tzatziki and hummus. This activity was a fantastic demonstration of functional life skills and teamwork. Pupils were fully independent in locating all the necessary ingredients and equipment needed for both recipes. They successfully followed multi-step instructions, measuring and mixing to perfection to ensure the dips are perfect for our guests tomorrow!
It was a busy, focused, and fun afternoon, and we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy the fruits of their hard work at the coffee morning!
Graffiti Stars:
What a day at Milestone @ Wilmington! We had a blast with graffiti artist Leon from Graffiti Stars, who led a fantastic workshop for our young people. Together, they created two vibrant pieces of art: a new inclusive welcome sign for the main building and a fun sign for the M@W café. It was inspiring to see every student get hands-on, choosing the colors, shapes, and words that expressed their own ideas. A massive thank you to Leon and all our amazing young artists!
This week, our pupils put on their chef hats and took over the school cafe, proving they have what it takes to run a professional kitchen! As part of our work experience, the pupils designed, cooked, and served a delicious meal to over 40 people!
The students started by taking a trip to the supermarket, where they independently navigated the aisles to find all the ingredients on their shopping list. Their hard work and collaboration paid off as they successfully prepared and served their cafe special.
But their culinary adventures didn't stop there! The pupils also worked together to create this week's Friday special: a warm and comforting autumn butternut squash and coconut milk soup.
It was a fantastic week filled with teamwork, independence, and incredible food. Well done to all our young chefs!
