As part of our festive celebrations, Milestone@Wilmington pupils had the delightful opportunity to attend ‘Snow White,’ an enchanting Christmas pantomime held at The Woodville Halls Theatre in Gravesend. This experience proved to be truly magical for our pupils. They not only thoroughly enjoyed the performance but also demonstrated exemplary behaviour, contributing significantly to the overall joy of the experience.
The Pupils laughed and cheered, participating in the traditional pantomime call and response, as well as booing the evil Queen.(and even danced at the end!) and everyone had a truly wonderful time. There wasn’t an empty seat in the packed theatre and everyone found it hilarious.
M@W's Christmas dinner, the afternoon was an accumulation of lots of hard work and planning. First, pupils researched the cost of ingredients making sure the checked different shops for the best price. Then, we organised ourselves into two groups, shoppers and chefs. The first group of students went out to the supermarket to buy the ingredients making sure they stuck to our budgets and the other half were our cooks. It was a fantastic festive atmosphere that we will remember for a very long time to come.
John Street is a World-renowned Stunt Coordinator who has worked on some of the highest-grossing action movies of all time. A specialist fight choreographer, John has worked in all aspects of action. He came in on Friday 15th to talk about his job and take questions from the students who are working towards their Performing Arts Asdan accreditation.
I can't believe that we are in the final push, the term has started with a real push being made on finishing off the ASDAN qualifications. I am really proud of all of them for the work that they have put into these over the last five terms. I am now pleased that they are all now submitted.
The focus has now switched to preparation for the upcoming functional skills tests in reading, writing, maths and speaking & listening. I am really proud in the work that they have all put in up until this moment and I am confident they will all do their best.
We are also looking forward to more opportunities for them to complete their life skills challenges including our ongoing challenge of travel training and using public transport. We recently took part in some train travel to another town and look forward to more opportunities such as this.
Another focus of this term is the students all taking part in a range of work experience opportunities including working at main site within classes, supporting the maintenance team and within the school kitchen. We have also had students working within the community cupboard (a local food bank) and DPA.
Whilst term six will be very busy I am confident they will all be able to enjoy the learning and new experiences that will be made available to them.
Although we all carried on working towards our ASDAN qualifications and further developing our functional skills in preparation for upcoming exams and next steps the highlight for many of the students was the residential week. The 6th form split into two groups.
Group one remained at Wilmington but took part in a range of exciting cross curricular activities ranging from rocket launches to archery, cooking competitions to talent shows. It was lovely to see the students fully embrace all of the opportunities that were given to them.
Group Two vwntrued out to Carroty Wood, part of Rock UK. They were given the opportunity to take part in and experience a range of slighly more extreme (but very safe) activities ranging from climbing and abseiling, canoeing, raft building and high ropes amoungst others. The evening was generally finished off around the campfire.
It was particularly nice to see students from different classes and friendship groups working and socialising together.
Please see below for a selection of photos from the week.
Hever class worked really hard towards researching, making and selling items as part of the Easter Fayre, it was really good to see how the class has really started to bond and they have all been able to work within their own areas of strength towards a collective aim of having a high quality range of items to sell.
They have also been further developing their functional skills including making the most of a break in the weather to take part in some data handling exercises. They were able to collect data in a higher pressure environment, record this and then represent it in a range of ways including graphs and charts. Some of the class were then able to be extended into exploring how to interpret the data to make a range of statements.
We were able to reflect upon the success of the Christmas fair and use the lessons learnt from it to inform what they would like to develop for the upcoming Easter fair. It has been really good seeing all of them developing skills that can be applied to life post Milestone as well as working towards their ASDAN accreditation. We have begun to look at our third ASDAN qualification of maintaining work standards.
The students have all been really busy developing ideas and making items for their business enterprise and researching for their employability accreditation. They worked towards attending their first Christmas market and did very well, they had a range of different items and games for people to play and purchase. As part of the ASDAN they also attended a local farmers market to carry out market research which influenced which of the ideas were developed to be sold at the Christmas Market. It was really good to see all of the students taking an active role within the market and applying their functional maths and English skills in a practical situation.
I have been incredibly proud of the way that the students have settled into Hever class, there have been lots of new friendships made and they have all adjusted well to life at Wilmington whether that be following the holidays and returning or joining us for the first time.
During this term as well as settling into new routines they will be given the opportunity to falurise themselves with the functional skills curriculum and ASDAN courses we will be working on this year, please see the top of the page for additional information.
Our ASDAN Life Skills challenge this term is basic first aid, they will be learning new skills that will hopefully not but may come in useful in helping others.
