This thorough approach ensures they’re getting the best value for money, which is crucial for helping to raise those all-important profit margins.
With each product concept, our students have a lot to consider and discuss. They need to think about how much it costs to make their items versus how much they can sell them for. It’s essential that they strike a balance, ensuring the sale price remains reasonable while still allowing them to make a good profit.
Recently, the students returned from an insightful trip to Dartford, where they gathered their goods. We look forward to showing you how these will be transformed into enterprise items that will soon be available for purchase.

There was a buzz in the room as students dove into their designs, transforming old items into something fresh and fabulous. There was plenty of sanding and peeling going on—truly a hive of activity!
As they got stuck into the work, students soon discovered that sanding, while it might look straightforward, is not as easy as it seems. Many expressed surprise at the effort required to get those surfaces smooth and ready for repainting. It was fascinating to see their initial enthusiasm shift into a deep appreciation for the labour involved in upcycling. By the end of the session, they were a bit more worn out but much wiser about the process.

Wilmington Christmas Market
Student's account of preparing and working in the Christmas market:
Kayleigh:
The project started with us making a mood board in a group and we chose 4 of ideas and then we had to research the price of the products and also made a list in our teams. Then we went shopping to buy the items that we needed and then we started making them.
When I got to the market some items were already sold and we spoke to the customers and I told them how much my chocolate wreaths were.
I felt really confident talking to the customers and also we counted the money to see how much we got.
Next time I would talk bit louder so the customer can hear us and also talk slowly when you're talking to the customer so they know what we are saying.
Tommy:
We made things to sell and we researched how much it would cost to make them. We sold the things we made at the Wilmington Memorial Hall. We spoke to people who wanted to buy our things and we handed them change if they needed any. I found it hard at times to remain calm under all the pressure. It was just a bit overwhelming for someone with no experience in anything like this before. Next time I would bring my word search book to calm myself down if I get stressed.
Jennifer:
Before the market I researched products I wanted to make. Then we made an idea board. Then we got into groups and chose a few of the products that we wanted to make.
After that we researched the items we needed to make the products. Once we researched the items we then looked in the shops and compared the prices to see what was the cheapest and best value. We then wrote a list of products and then we went shopping at Dartford and bought the products.
Once we bought the products we sorted them into groups. We also counted how much we had of each and how many items we could make and sell.
Then we made the products in groups.
Today at the market we worked in groups and displayed our products on the table. Once we displayed the products we then put price labels on the tables.
Then people came and looked at our stall. People were asking questions about our products. After our products were starting to sell and become very successful.
Clea:
We made an ideas board to see what we want to make. From that we chose four items to sell. We then researched the prices of our products and made a list of what had to be bought. We went shopping to buy what was needed. We made our products to sell, solved issues that we found to make a perfect product.
I enjoyed talking to customers, it helped to build my confidence.
On the day of the market I wore christmas jumper and did my makeup to look christmassy. When I arrived all my products i had made had been sold that made me feel happy and proud.
Becky:
Before the market I mainly helped with designing and making the products along with figuring out what prices to put them at.
I worked at the stall where I showed customers what we sold and making sure they paid the right amount when buying an item.
I did not really find anything very difficult during the market, the only issue I dealt with was how fast we ran out of stock on certain items.
Next time, I want to make sure we have higher stock in order to avoid running out.
Milestone@Wilmington Christmas Market
On 4th December, M@W hosted a brilliant Christmas market that surpassed all expectations! The atmosphere was vibrant, with friends and families coming together to support the event. As soon as you walked through the doors, the hall was bustling with excitement. There was so much Christmas shopping taking place; you could feel the festive spirit all around.
It was particularly heartwarming to see visitors from a local care home joining us. Some of our pupils had done work experience there in the summer term, so it was lovely to reconnect. Everyone seemed to enjoy each other’s company, sharing memories and making new ones.
As if the shopping wasn’t enough, the students had also prepared festive treats and hot drinks to keep everyone fuelled up for their shopping spree. From yummy sponge cake to delicious mince pies, it was a feast for the senses!
The icing on the cake was that all the stalls ended up sold out by the end of the day, which was just fantastic! All in all, it was a huge success, and we can’t wait to do it all over again next year!
A huge shout out to Clea for organising the raffle for that stunning handmade wreath! Her efforts truly paid off, helping us raise a good chunk of change. Cheers, Clea!
Online Communication Presentation
On 9th December, we welcomed parents into M@W for an to feature a presentation and video created by our students. The focus was on the dual nature of social media, highlighting both its positive and negative effects on their lives and mental health.
As the students took turns presenting, it was clear they had poured their hearts and minds into this project. Many spoke candidly about their experiences, sharing personal stories that resonated deeply with everyone in the room. It was astonishing to witness such openness; some accounts of negative interactions really struck a chord, demonstrating just how social media can influence self-esteem and well-being.
Yet, amidst the challenges, there were also stories of support and connection found through these platforms. The evening was a genuine celebration of our students coming together to share their thoughts and feelings on a topic that's so relevant in today’s world. Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity for parents and students alike to engage in meaningful discussions, and I believe it will leave a lasting impact on our community.
Christmas Jumper Day
Today was Christmas Jumper Day, and we showcased our fabulous festive jumpers! It was lovely to see everyone getting into the spirit of the season, with all sorts of cheerful designs. To celebrate this jolly occasion, we embarked on an exciting online murder mystery. The challenge was to uncover which elf had stolen the naughty and nice list! It was a fantastic way to engage the class, as we worked together, shared ideas, and cracked clues. The students showed their resilience, teamwork and creativity, making it a memorable day.

Module 1
We've had a cracking start to the new term - full of energy and enthusiasm.
Our students have really embraced their new routines, settling in brilliantly. They recently took charge of running the school cafe, demonstrating top-notch teamwork and communication skills. It's been fantastic to see them in action, working together like a well-oiled machine, with the older students helping the new.
We also had our first shopping trip, and let me tell you, this year's Rochester class are shopaholics in the making! They nailed it, following their shopping lists to a T and getting everything we needed for the cafe. It was a seamless and successful mission, showing just how independent and capable our students are.
I'm incredibly proud of the effort our students are putting in to the start of this term. Here's to more exciting adventures and achievements ahead for Rochester class!
Asdan - Learning Through Work Experience
Today we had a brilliant start to our ASDAN course! Everyone engaged and excited as they seemed eager to get into the topic. We kicked things off by researching and discussing ideas for seasonal products for Christmas markets, and the creativity was flowing!
Students conceptualise a variety of traditional festive ideas, from handcrafted decorations to delightful homemade treats that would surely entice anyone strolling through a market. It was great to see the enthusiasm as they shared their visions for what would make their stalls stand out.
But the fun didn't stop there! We also explored some awesome alternative Christmas ideas. Some students came up with innovative concepts that challenged the norm.
Overall, we've kicked off the new course on a high note, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes us. Here’s to more sessions full of festive cheer and creativity in the weeks to come!
Visit to Bluewater for horticulture work experience
We had a fantastic morning during our recent visit to Bluewater's horticulture project on the 18th of September. The sun was shining, and we had the chance to explore the beautiful gardens. It was fantastic to see the class so engaged with nature, learning about where our food comes from.
The highlight, of course, was the chance to pick an abundance of fresh produce straight from the ground. We gathered a delightful selection which included crisp cucumbers, juicy tomatoes, vibrant beetroots, and lovely courgettes. Oh, and let’s not forget the rhubarb, apples, and pears! The children were absolutely delighted with what they had collected, and it was heartwarming to see them so proud of their haul.
Now, we’re all geared up to bring this fresh goodness back to school. The plan is to whip up some very special dishes in our cafe, using all the fantastic produce we've picked. I can't wait to see what creative recipes the students come up with! Stay tuned for more updates on our culinary adventures!
Working at the M@W Cafe
This week, our pupils have been busy working in the M@W café, where they have been honing their culinary skills by preparing a delicious cooked breakfast. Each child had their individual responsibility, taking charge of cooking and preparing various items, from sausages to scrambled eggs, mushrooms, and cooked tomatoes.
It was truly delightful to see the teamwork and enthusiasm as they collaborated in the kitchen. The smells wafting through the café was simply irresistible and the end results were nothing short of fantastic! Not only did the pupils learn valuable skills, but they also enjoyed the rewarding experience of their hard work being shared and appreciated by their peers. A massive well done to everyone involved.
ASDAN - Rights and Responsibilities in the Workplace
Our students are really putting in the effort to tackle the learning objectives of this course, and I must say, it's truly impressive to see their commitment.
Recently, we’ve been diving into the essential rights individuals possess as employees and the various laws designed to protect us. It's a vital topic that will help prepare the class for their future careers, and our discussions in class have been insightful. We've also explored external bodies that offer support, such as Citizens Advice. It’s great for students to know they have somewhere to turn if they ever need employment advice or assistance with workplace issues.
Additionally, we are taking the opportunity to reflect on our responsibilities in the workplace. Our time working in the café has been a fantastic source of inspiration for this. Students are actively engaging with the concepts of teamwork, communication, customer service, and health and safety all while understanding the importance of their roles and responsibilities.
Speaking and Listening - Yasmin and Terry's courtroom
This week, our pupils engaged in a lively debate, where they had the opportunity to choose from twelve thought-provoking statements displayed on the board. They dove into research, gathering facts and data to back up their arguments — and it was fantastic to see their enthusiasm!
Once they were ready, it was time for the courtroom experience. Each pupil took their turn in front of our 'judge', while their peers formed the jury. The atmosphere was electrifying! As the arguments were presented, a few healthy disagreements arose, leading to some passionate counterarguments. It truly showed the growing confidence our pupils are developing throughout the course.
As the debate heated up, it was clear that everyone was fully engaged, and by the end, it was time for the jury to cast their vote. Overall, this activity not only honed their speaking and listening skills but also fostered critical thinking and respectful discourse.
Young Writers Competition
Last year, our budding author Clea submitted a story to a Young Writers competition, and the theme was all things spooky. Being a massive fan of the eerie and chilling, Clea was inspired to craft her tale, "The Captain." It’s been an exciting journey, and I’m absolutely delighted to announce that her story has been selected for publication in the upcoming book, "Fright Club - Darkness Falls," due out later this year!
This is such a fantastic achievement for Clea, and it’s a wonderful reminder of the creativity our students possess.
Well done, Clea!
Speaking and Listening Activity - Guess My Film
Today, we had an engaging speaking and listening activity where students were tasked with playing "guess my film." The objective was for each student to take turns asking questions to figure out the film their peer had in mind, but there was a twist—they only had ten questions to make their guess! I was really impressed with how respectful everyone was towards each other, taking turns patiently and making thoughtful guesses. It was fantastic to see the creativity and collaboration in action. Overall, it was a fun and interactive session that really got the class buzzing!
M@W Coffee Morning
Today we hosted our first M@W coffee morning of the year, and what a fantastic success it turned out to be! The students were very excited to welcome their parents, ready to show off their culinary skills. Each class worked together, preparing a delightful array of treats that showcased the skills they’ve been honing during their shifts at the M@W café.
We had a mouth-watering selection of sausage rolls, apple turnovers, lovely sandwiches, and delightful jam tarts, just to name a few! It was heartening to see our students taking pride in their creations, all while collaborating and supporting each other in the kitchen. The teamwork truly shone through, and it was brilliant to see them applying what they’ve learnt.
Of course, one of the highlights of the morning was having parents join us to share in the experience. It was a perfect opportunity for them to witness M@W at its very best. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with everyone indulging in the delicious fare and enjoying the company of fellow parents and caregivers.
We are so grateful for the support from our parents, and interactions like these that really bring our ethos to life. Here’s to many more successful coffee mornings at M@W café!

The Preloved/Reloved ASDAN group has kicked off an exciting project, diving in and making vision boards. Our pupils have begun brainstorming and designing unique ideas for the furniture we've been given and sourced. It's all about giving these items a new lease of life, the enthusiasm for the project is exciting.
As they explore various concepts, the students are diving into research, collecting inspirational ideas and examples from various sources. From quirky upcycling techniques to innovative decorative styles, there's a world of creativity unfolding. The process not only encourages teamwork and creativity but also fosters an appreciation for sustainability. Witnessing our young people engaged in thoughtful design is truly inspiring. We can’t wait to see how their ideas transform those nearly forgotten pieces into something fresh and fabulous! Stay tuned for updates on their progress!
