Turing Module 1

Our Theme - Who We Are

For Module 1 and 2 our central idea is:  Exploring history deepens our understanding of our identity.

Subsequently the lines of inquiry we have chosen are:

Who are Turing Class?

At the start of Module 1 we all thought about the things that define us as an introduction to new staff members and to new peers.

Have you ever thought about what makes you who you are?

Rome - The start of our journey.

We have started our first module with the Roman invasion of Britain.  We explored the impact of this invasion on our current political system, how it may have impacted some of the religious values and beliefs in Britain, and we also thought about the way in which our homes and roads were developed after this invasion. However, one of the things we most enjoyed was learning about the rebellion led by Boudicca.

The Political System

When learning about the Roman political system, we made comparisons to our own.  We then created speeches to use in our school council elections.

How far did the Roman invasion spread?

We carried out research, and used our map skills, to learn about the Roman invasion and just how wide spread this was.

Boudicca

We have really enjoyed learning about Boudicca's rebellion, and the importance of standing for what we believe in.

English

In addition to Fresh Start Phonics (RWI), in our English lessons this module we have read The Stone Mouse by Jenny Nimmo.  We became quite invested in the characters and made inferences about how characters show their feelings, aswell as writing setting descriptions. Take a look at some of our learning below.

Maths

At the start of the term we focused on place value, before moving onto addition and subtraction.  We have been using manipulatives to secure our understanding of different maths concepts such as exchanging and regrouping.

Maths

In place value we have been partitioning numbers in different ways.

In addition and subtraction we have been thinking about fact families and how our understanding of these can support us in solving problems by using inverse operations.

English

We explored some of the characters in the stone mouse and how they act.

Using VIPERS we have answered questions about the book.

After we finished the book we created our own reviews...hopefully without spoilers!

In our setting descriptions we have used noun phrases to add detail.  For Halloween we even did some spooky setting descriptions.

Science

Our science this module has focused on learning about the bones and muscles.

Did you know that there are even bones in your ear?

We have thought about how the muscles work to help our bodies to move.
