Anning Class

Modules 1 & 2

Transdisciplinary Theme: Who We Are

Central Idea: Exploring history deepens our understanding of our identity.

Lines of Inquiry:

Module 1

We began our journey by investigating the significance of our central idea. Additionally, we started learning about Roman history, setting the stage for an exciting journey into the past.

Ancient Rome
How Rome began?

We  learned about the Zones of Regulation, which has helped us gain a better understanding of our feelings and emotions.

Community Learning and Skills Development

We embarked on a community travel day to Dartford. We opted for public transport, specifically by bus, and we were able to use public transport very effectively. Our first stop was the local library, where we enthusiastically borrowed a variety of books. Subsequently, we explored the vibrant market and immersed ourselves in the rich exhibits at the museum. The day was truly exceptional, with all of us showcasing exemplary behaviour, showing our community that we are happy and aspirational learners.

Module 2

French

We have been enjoying learning about different animals in French, and we have demonstrated good proficiency in both speaking and listening skills.

Maths

In maths class, students have learned about partitioning to make adding and subtracting easier in their heads. This helps them get really good at maths and understand numbers better. They're practising by doing exercises where they figure out the best way to split up numbers, do the maths in parts, and put it all back together. It's not just about getting the right answer; it's also about really understanding how numbers work, so they're ready for even more challenging maths later on.

When adding big numbers with more than four digits, we line them up so each place value matches. We start adding from the right, moving to the left, and if the sum is more than nine, we carry over the extra to the next column. This helps make sure we get the right answer and gets us good at understanding the value of each digit in really large numbers.

Remembrance Day

Anning class proudly took part in the traditional Remembrance Service at The Leigh Academy, alongside representatives from the local Royal British Legion. Our students actively participated by laying a wreath. The service was a success, we couldn’t be prouder of our students for showing such respect for this truly remarkable event.

In class, we explored the significance of Remembrance Day by reading and exploring the meaning of the poem 'In Flanders Fields.' In addition to literary analysis, we illustrated the poem and engaged in the creation of remarkable artwork to commemorate the occasion.

Anti-Bullying Week

We supported Anti-Bullying Week again this year, from Monday, November 13th, to Friday, November 17th. The theme for Anti-Bullying Week 2023 was 'Make A Noise About Bullying,' and we engaged in various themed activities related to this topic.

First Aid Workshop

Our students have acquired essential first aid skills, enhancing their confidence in responding to emergencies using everyday objects and understanding where to seek support for injuries or illnesses.

Swimming Gala

Some of our students took part in the LAT Swimming Gala on Tuesday 21st November at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School in Rochester. They enjoyed being a part of this event and meeting the students from the other LAT schools. Students competing demonstrated an ability to swim 25 meters independently.

Children In Need

On Friday, in celebration of Children in Need day, we engaged in a creative activity by drawing Pudsey Bear and giving him unique features, much like our protagonist Danny would do! The results were fantastic, with Robot Pudsey, Dinosaur Pudsey, Pirate Pudsey, and many more imaginative variations. Our students demonstrated exceptional creativity throughout this activity.

Inquiry Learning

We initiated our exploration of WWI as part of our unit of inquiry. We began by collectively understanding our existing knowledge as a class and identifying the questions we would like to explore throughout the term.

We deepened our understanding of World War I by identifying countries allied with the Allies, central powers, and those that remained neutral. To reinforce this knowledge, we located these countries on a world map.

Community Learning and Skills Development

Anning Class organised and participated in a community outing to Dartford and Bluewater Shopping Centre. Our first stop was Dartford Library, where we returned or collected new books, engaging in shared reading with our classmates. Subsequently, we went to Poundland to buy items for our Christmas enterprise project. Additionally, we explored Bluewater for lunch and engaged in a shopping centre scavenger hunt, promoting valuable opportunities to enhance team-building, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Throughout our community participation event, our students exhibited exemplary behaviour, showcasing fantastic skills in using public transport and managing money.

Snow White Pantomime @ Woodville Halls Theatre

As part of our festive celebrations, M@L students had the delightful opportunity to attend 'Snow White,' an enchanting Christmas pantomime held at The Woodville Halls Theatre in Gravesend. This experience proved to be truly magical for our students. They not only thoroughly enjoyed the performance but also demonstrated exemplary behaviour, contributing significantly to the overall joy of the experience. Subsequently, our students wrote reviews about the pantomime.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr Seuss

We read 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas,' and we loved it! First, we created a list of things we would need for the Christmas heist. Then, we devised the steps required to successfully pull off the plan. Finally, we wrote clear and effective instructions on how to steal Christmas. We had so much fun!
