Term 2

What are we learning?

Theme learning

Our central idea this term is "People's expression of themselves can be enjoyed and appreciated by others." We have started by investigating and responding to art by expressionist painters such as Edvard Munch and Kadinsky. Following this, we looked at expressionists from each continent and discussed how our culture and experiences influence our self expression. We have also looked at Banksy's newest creations in Ukraine and discussed if his grafitti should be allowed to remain on walls.

In computing, students have been working on their inquiry towards our central idea by learning about filmmaking techniques. We have practised stopmotion filmmaking and editing shorter clips together to create a short film. Students are working towards an end project of making a film with a message that is important to them. Watch some of our films below.

Maths

In maths, we started by learning how to solve addition and subtraction word problems using different techniques. We are now learning about multiplication and division and have a weekly statistics lesson.

English

Our English group are reading "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" by Louis Sachar. The book focuses on Bradley, a young boy who regularly lies, is unkind to others and is not well liked in school. He makes friends with Jeff who is new to the school and starts to talk to the school councillor.

Have a look at our comic strips made in Book Creator showing Bradley's inner thoughts and recapping some of the events of the story.

News

This term, all students have sat their first Functional Skills mocks! For some of our students, these are the first exams they have ever taken. They all worked extremely hard and should be very proud of themselves.

Students practised their community learning skills by planning and researching Christmas gifts for important people in their lives. We then went to Bluewater and used our money skills to purchase our presents.
