Email from DOE Communications 6/8/2023:
Mahalo for reaching out. Attached is our recommended protocol for school project events like groundbreakings, blessings and dedications. Ben nailed the basic groundbreaking components below, including leis for VIPs, a Kahu, a ceremonial mound of dirt and shovels/o'o. There are also other location-specific items to consider like a tent(s), chairs, podium, sound system, refreshments, etc., depending on the scope of the project. After the project is complete, a maile lei for untying would be the final dedication ceremony element to welcome attendees to use the new facility.
The scope of a ceremony is often linked to the size of the project. Larger projects will have more VIPs, speakers and attendees, and smaller projects may have more modest ceremonies limited to small groups. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and we can help determine that appropriate fit. Thanks!
With aloha,
Derek
