We have external DVD players in the IT/AV office that you can borrow. Just stop by the IT/AV office and we can lend one to you.
Most likely, the DVD that you are attempting to play is going to be region locked and will be unable to play with the default application, DVD Player. In that case, you can use VLC, a open source multimedia player that is already installed on your laptop.
Open VLC
Select File > Open Disk from the top menu bar or use the ⌘ + D shortcut.
Select Disk
You can also use VLC to crop, convert video formats, add subtitles, record your screen and more.

Connect to Apple TV
Occasionally, when streaming a video from your laptop to the Apple TV, you'll be met with a black / blank screen. Unfortunately, this is due to various forms of Digital Rights Management, a way for streaming and entertainment services to try and maintain strict control of their property. Due to the way that Apple has created it's recording and screen sharing technology, it clashes with how sites like Netflix protect their content.
Solutions
