Parent-Teacher Conferences

Freeman High School will be holding parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, February 21 from 12:30 – 4:00 PM. An online sign-up is available to schedule appointments with the teachers you wish to meet with. If you are unable to access the online sign-up, please email the teacher(s) or call the school at 804-673-3700.

Both in-person and virtual conferences will be offered. Please indicate in your PTC Fast sign-up if you would like to meet with teachers virtually. On Monday, February 20, all virtual meeting links will be directly emailed to those who request virtual conferences. Parents who do not indicate a conference is virtual in PTC Fast will not receive the virtual meeting links and will need to come to Freeman for in-person conferences.

Common Sense Education Lessons & Family Tips

During our Directed Study time on Wednesdays during March, students will be taking part in classroom lessons from Common Sense Education. Common Sense Education's lessons help students learn the habits and skills they need to use technology safely and responsibly in school, at home, and beyond. The lessons we will be doing will be specific to online communication, relationships, and digital drama.

WHAT IS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP?

Teens today may seem like experts at using technology, but the digital world requires all kinds of skills and habits that kids don’t just pick up as they go. Digital citizenship helps them learn those skills. The Common Sense lessons help high school students reflect on their tech use and look at how media is designed to hook them. They also learn about online hate speech, how what they post online affects their future, and ways to spot hoaxes and misinformation.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO:

Common Sense Education provides resources to help you support your kid’s learning. Beginning last week, as we prepare to deliver these lessons in March, we will begin sharing weekly tips for families from Common Sense Education. You can also visit the Common Sense website at www.commonsensemedia.org for more. Working together with Common Sense Education, we can prepare today’s kids to think critically and use tech in positive, creative, and powerful ways.

Help Kids Fight Cyberbullying and Other Mean Online Behavior: Most kids will encounter mean behavior at some point in their digital lives. For some kids, this experience is a blip that's easily forgotten, while for others it can have deep, long-lasting effects. For parents, the key is staying involved in kids' lives -- both online and off -- so they can step in and offer help if necessary. With guidance from parents and educators, kids can learn how to dodge the drama and stand up for others.

WEEKLY TIP:

Check in about online life: Just like you'd ask your kid about their sleep, exercise, and eating, stay on top of their online life. Who are they chatting with? How do people treat each other in the games and on the sites they're using?

Senior Mid-Year Transcripts

Seniors who applied to 4 year colleges should begin requesting their midyear transcripts in Parchment. Seniors should reach out to their school counselor with questions. The directions below will be posted for seniors on Schoology:

Seniors,

If you applied to a 4-year college, your midyear transcripts need to be ordered in Parchment - no transcript will be sent unless you request it in Parchment.

1. Order a mid-year transcript (you can do this now!) in Parchment.

2. If you applied to the college through Common App, select "Common App first year applicant" as the destination in Parchment. If you applied using a school specific application, you should select the individual college as the destination in Parchment.

3. When ordering, you must choose HOLD FOR GRADES - this ensures we wait to send the semester transcript.

4. Mid-year transcripts will not be sent until mid-February after semester grades and final rank has been finalized.

All colleges know you are waiting on HCPS to finalize grades, do not worry about the deadline they email you about - as long as you order your transcript, it will be sent.

Summer School Online Health & PE

The lottery for summer school online Health/PE will open on February 3rd and close on February 24th. Students who are interested in completing their PE 9 or PE 10 requirements during Summer 2023 must enter the lottery during this time. The cost for summer school PE is $225. Summer school PE begins on June 13th and ends on July 25th. To learn more and enter the lottery, please click here.

AP Testing

Students interested in taking an AP Exam may still register for an exam with a $40 late fee. Students may continue to register for AP Exams until March 6th. Students who paid a deposit for their exam must pay their remaining balance no later than March 6th. Exams with a remaining balance will be canceled without a refund. Important note: Late exams will only be approved in the instance of illness (with a note from the doctor), two AP exams in the same testing block, religious holiday, or HCPS sponsored athletic/academic events. Yearbook Senior Tribute Ads - For Senior Parents

Dear Senior Parents,

A long-cherished senior tradition has now arrived. If you would like to include a Senior Tribute Ad in this year’s yearbook, please see the attached flyer for information on how to include a Senior Tribute Ad for your senior in our upcoming yearbook. There are two payment options: online directly through our publisher, Herff-Jones, or on our OSP. If you choose OSP, you’ll need to email our senior ad editor, Sophie Armstrong at hcps-armstrse1@henricostudents.org, with the congratulatory message to your senior as well as the photos you wish to include. A sample is included below.

Class of 2023 - Senior Exam Schedule and Graduation Practice

Seniors and their families may review the senior exam schedule by clicking here. All seniors who plan on participating in the graduation ceremony on June 6th are required to attend both graduation practices on Friday June 2nd from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon and Monday June 5th from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon. Students who miss graduation practice are not permitted to walk in the graduation ceremony. Students and families with questions or concerns should reach out to their student’s assigned administrator.

Parent/Guardians of Class of 2023 Seniors,

Please find linked here the Josten’s Graduation newsletter with information about ordering graduation announcements and other senior graduation related gear. Paper copies of this information was given to your Senior by their Government teacher (or 1st period teacher if they are not in Gov’t class) last week. It is recommended to have your order placed no later than December 1st to ensure you receive the custom school announcements for graduation (OPTIONAL). A Josten’s representative will be available on November 30th during all lunches in the cafeteria if your student prefers to place the order in person. FEV Tutor - Free online tutoring!

Is your student struggling to complete homework or understand class concepts? Henrico County has contracted with a tutoring service, FEV Tutor, to provide *FREE* one on one online support after school hours and during designated school hours. Students can book a session ahead of time, get instant on-demand help 24/7, or set up a regular meeting time with a tutor for more comprehensive support. Students should connect through Clever and search for “FEV Tutor”. Students and tutors work together using an interactive whiteboard, chat or audio chat function and the format can be personalized for different learning styles. HCPS has partnered with MajorClarity, an online academic and career planning platform designed to help every student in grades 6-12 explore and discover future careers and courses that closely relate to their interests, personality, skills and strengths and take ownership of their academic and career goals! Because parents/guardians play an integral role in their student’s academic and career planning process, students are encouraged to access MajorClarity at home with their family in addition to the various planned and scheduled opportunities to work in the platform at school. Introducing: Freeman Family Teacher Shout- Outs!

As a part of our culture of appreciation and acknowledgment of the positive things that happen at DSF each week, we ask our staff to share "Shout-Outs" or positive messages about a colleague from the week prior. We publish them for the whole staff to see as a way of growing the good and celebrating wins.

I'd love to have the community's help. I'll post this link each week and deliver any "shout-outs" to our whole staff in our internal weekly newsletter. Cell Phones in Class

The HCPS Code of Conduct stipulates that student cell phones must be off and away during instructional time. This year at DSF, students may be asked to place their phone in a designated location in most classes during class time. Students who do not and whose phone is out without permission during class time will have that device confiscated and turned into the main office.

Phones will be retuned to parents and guardians. Students may use the main office landline to inform parents that their phone was confiscated.

Student Drop-Off and Pick-up

Student drop-off and pick-up locations are in the student parking lot behind the Baseball field, off of Camden Drive. Parents are asked to pull into the main student parking lot when picking up students at dismissal. Parents should not use the visitor's parking lot in front of the school to drop off or pick up students during the start of the school day (8:30 to 9:15 a.m.) or at dismissal (3:30 to 4:15 p.m.). Please note that it is extremely unsafe, at any time of the day, to drop students off on the curb in front of the school. The Drivers’ Education Lot across Camden Drive is ONLY for buses. Let’s ensure the safety of our young drivers by following this request.

Student Dress Code

The Henrico County Code of Conduct mandates a dress code to ensure a proper learning environment. Students are expected to review that policy prior to choosing clothing and those not adhering to dress-code will be asked to change. Those who repeatedly violate this Code of Conduct policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Please help us avoid that situation by speaking with your student about the dress code.
