Planning Questions
Are you working by yourself or in a team?
Myself
What materials will you need for your project?
Laser cutter and wood
What is your plan to create in this project?
Sign for my room
What unique qualities will your project have?
It will have different layers
Today, I began making the sign and got the back circle, the big J, and my name done.
Today, I made the little bars, and the est. 2010 done. I also made a sample so I could see how it'll hopefully look after it's all done.
Today, I sent my project to go get lasered. I also got my reflection started.
I forgot my sign so I finished my reflection instead of painting it and making the video for it.
Today, I got the sign painted at home and will let it dry before making the video later on.
Today, I made my video and finished final touch-ups on the website.
Reflection
Using Tinker Cad and the Glow Forge, I created a sign that had my name on it. I made it because I wanted to use the laser cutter for the first time. Also, I wanted another sign for my room.
During this process, I learned how to use the glow forge. You can use it by making every individual thing on Tinker cad and then sending it as an SVG and sending it to the laser cutter and then you get yourself something that is laser cut. I also learned how to make the letters pop. You can do it by just making it a bigger or deeper hole.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project is tied to Knowledge Constructor. It ties Knowledge Constructor because I used the laser cutter for the first time.
A challenge I overcame on this project was getting the thing to separate the joey and the big J and not have it just look like the same gap. I was able to do it by making the joey get dug deeper. I chose to make the joey engraved deeper because the J is better with a hole in it rather than it being the hole, in my opinion.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the difficulty level. I would change it because I need to challenge myself and this was something I made in 2 days. Also, I would change it because if I went for a higher difficulty, then the projects would look cooler.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, and Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. It connects to the engineering design because I designed a sign and had it laser cut on the glow forge.
My project connects to careers in manufacturing. It connects to those careers because laser cutting is a big thing when manufacturing auto body parts, just they use metal and I used wood. Some of the jobs are something like a laser engineer or really any job that has the word laser in it.
