What is the problem?

People throw way too much trash and not all of it goes where it needs to go. There's trash everywhere you look even if it is a tiny piece of it there's no telling what kind of an impact it could have on the environment.[1]

What solutions have been tried?

They treat it so that it is lighter, smaller, and easy to handle. They also burn it, but that releases toxic gas into the air causing air pollution, and People also use trash to make compost.[2]

How did these solutions fall short of fixing the problem?

By burning it will cause gasses to be released into the air and would cause air pollution which we are currently trying to help fix.

Recommended solutions.

Here are some ideas: instead of drinking water out of plastic bottles we could just drink using reusable cups.[3] Reducing the use of plastics, Lots of people compost on their own and use the soil in their yards! Some waste materials, like glass, paper, aluminum, and plastics, can be recycled and reused. [4]

Who is already working to fix this problem?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for the protection of human health and the environment. EPA: Provides technical assistance to support recovery planning of public health and infrastructure, such as waste/water treatment plants.[5]

How could teenagers get involved to fix this problem?

Some ways that teenagers can help is by picking up discarded items and dispose of or recycle them properly. Or Start Your Own Initiative or Volunteer With Environmental Organizations. Reduce/Recycle Paper Recycle More Often, and Save Resources.[6]
