Spreadsheets

A spreadsheet allows you to organize and analyse data by putting it in rows and columns. It also allows you to perform various mathematical computations easily and to create visual graphs.

There are many different applications that allow you to use a spreadsheet. Some examples are:

  • Open Office Math
  • Quattro Pro
  • MS Excel
  • Google Sheets

We will be using Microsoft Excel for this course.

Timeline:

  1. Introduction to Spreadsheets
      • Create a folder called /Spreadsheets within your BTT1O1 folder
      • Introduction
      • Moving around the screen activity

2. Do Basic Practice Activities: These activities will teach you some of the basics. Mr. Aldworth will check to verify that you have completed these. Save each one in your /Spreadsheet folder.

      • Activities #1-6 - Make sure to save your work using the filename specified.

3. Do Graph Activities: These activities will teach you how to turn your tables into a variety of graphs. Mr. Aldworth will verify that you have completed these.

      • Graph Activities #1-3 - Make sure to save your work using the filename specified.

4. Do Assignments 1 and 2 . You will need to submit these to the HandIn folder.

  • There is also an optional bonus Cell Referencing activity. This will introduce you to Cell referencing which we will go over as a class.

5. Absolute and Relative Cell Referencing: We will go through this as a class. It is an important idea when using formulas and auto-fill.

      • Note/Reference
      • Examples as a class
      • Activities 1 and 2 - Mr. Aldworth will check to verify that these are complete.

6. Bonus Assignments: The following 3 activities are optional (unless you are done early). You may complete them and show them to Mr. Aldworth. You may save these bonus marks until later and apply them to something to improve your mark. They may not be applied to the exams or the summative project.

      • Optional Assignment 2 (requires Excel file provided)
      • Optional Intermediate Activity 1 (requires Excel file provided)
      • Optional Intermediate Activity 2

7. There will be a written and practical test for this unit. Make sure you know:

      • Label vs. Value
      • Default Alignments
      • Function vs. Formula
      • Avsolute vs. Relative Cell Referencing
      • Numeric Formatting
