For a variety of reasons (personal, clinical, academic, etc), students may opt to withdraw from a clinical course. Depending on the reason, the CFA may be informed of the plan to withdraw at various stages in the process. Ultimately, the CFA will be informed of any changes to the plan of study by either Academic Affairs or the CFD.
When this occurs, you can take the following steps to wrap up the term:
Connect with the student around speaking with her preceptors about their withdraw.
Encourage and coach the student on closing the clinical experience and thanking the preceptor.
Send an email to the preceptor thanking them for their service.
Let the student’s clinical placement specialist know what has been communicated to the preceptor/site so that placement can reach out from their end with a coordinated response.
Be ready to work with students to reset for next clinical term in coordination with the Course Coordinator and, potentially, program leadership.
Please note that clinical experiences completed in a course from which a student has withdrawn are NOT counted towards their cumulative clinical requirements. Though students are made aware prior to withdrawing from a course, you can reinforce this. Be sure to adjust your Typhon settings accordingly in terms going forward so that cumulative hours and clinical experiences are accurately reported on subsequent MCEs and FCEs.
