Clinical faculty advisers (CFAs) have direct and frequent contact with advanced practice nursing students, serving in the dual role of advisor and supervisor of the clinical practicum. CFAs are responsible for collaborating with clinical preceptors and the oversight, coordination, and grading of their assigned students’ clinical experience. CFAs work collaboratively with didactic faculty in corresponding courses and attend scheduled faculty meetings. The first point of contact for all clinical concerns that arise from students and clinical preceptors should be the CFA.
Undergoing and completing all CFA orientation activities prior to working with students.
Review CFA handbook and adhere to policies and procedures described therein.
On-going (weekly to bi-weekly) communication with the student and more frequently as necessary.
Collaborate with the clinical placement team, clinical faculty director, clinical site, and preceptor in order to facilitate student clinical learning and to help problem solve clinical challenges when arise.
Ongoing communication with preceptor (q3-4 weeks) and more frequently if necessary.
Timely communication with Clinical Faculty Director when there are concerns for student performance, clinical site or preceptor issues.
Review, evaluate, and provide feedback on the student’s clinical documentation on a weekly basis.
Attend all regularly scheduled CFA meetings. Monthly Student & Faculty meeting is encouraged but not required.
Professional advisement of the student through regularly scheduled clinical conferences.
Evaluation of student’s clinical performance.
Problem solving and de-briefing of clinical experiences and OCI experiences.
Conduction of site visits every semester, virtually and/or on-site, with students and preceptors.
Development and implement of performance improvement plan or contract for students with significant clinical performance issues or concerns.
Evaluate clinical site at conclusion of each term.
Complete final clinical checklist at completion of each clinical course.
Support offered by the Academic Adviser (AA) and the CFA are complimentary in nature and will often occur in tandem. Academic Affairs will notify the student of their assigned academic advisor(s). CFAs work collaboratively with AA to resolve student specific academic concerns while CFAs focus on professional and clinical issues and AA offers expertise on program progression and course selection.
CFAs must maintain current DC RN and APRN licensure as well as an active RN and APRN license in their state of residence/clinical practice.
