As COVID impacts on clinical placement continue, incomplete coursework will be an ongoing issue for our students. Please see below for considerations and steps involved in resolving incomplete clinical coursework.
Incomplete clinical coursework may arise in the following events:
Delayed start in clinical space
Lack of clinical placement
Partial placement
Extenuating circumstances that impacted hours such as illness, preceptor vacations, emergencies.
If your student experiences any of the above, here are some things to keep in mind:
Please make sure the Course Coordinator (CC) is aware of the delay and an alternate timeline for assignment submission has been established. You may utilize the clinical assignment matrix to assist.
Notify the CFD if a delay or extenuating circumstance arises that impacts a student's completion of course requirements on time so they may ensure adequate clinical placements for future terms.
FOR NM/WHNP STUDENTS:
For clinical progressions that were interrupted by placement delays, please note the following:
NURO 6511 and NURO 7672 are both ambulatory courses that must be done in sequence as NURO 7672 competencies build on those of NURO 6511.
Because NURO 7672 and NURO 7684 have independent competencies, they may be done concurrently.
NURO 8722 competencies build upon those completed in the previous courses and can only be started AFTER all other clinical courses are complete. YOU CANNOT COMPLETE NURO 7684/7672/6511 AND NURO 8722 CONCURRENTLY.
The duration of each clinical course will be roughly 14 weeks, but may be highly dependent on preceptor/site availability and student learning needs. All deviations from a traditional 14 week term should be discussed with the Program Director.
FOR WHNP STUDENTS:
For clinical progressions that were interrupted by placement delays, please note the following:
NURO 6511 and NURO 7672 are both ambulatory courses that must be done in sequence as NURO 7672 competencies build on those of NURO 6511.
NURO 8727 competencies build upon those completed in the previous courses and must be done after the other courses are complete. YOU CANNOT COMPLETE NURO 7672/6511 AND NURO 8727 CONCURRENTLY.
The duration of each clinical course is highly dependent on preceptor/site availability and student learning needs.
Students may only continue in the clinical space past week 15 of the term if they hold incomplete coursework. Please be sure the student has the mental capacity to do so, the site is available to host the student past term, and that clinical placement is aware in the event contracts must be modified.
Process for completing incomplete course work
If your student is splitting hours between two sites:
Students should collect a MCE or FCE, whichever is appropriate based on hours completed, prior to leaving the first site that speaks to where they are at in their clinical course objectives & competencies.
Page 1 & 2 of the MCE/FCE should be uploaded by the student and with page 2 completed by CFA directly in Canvas using the annotation features. Mark incomplete on FCEs if the hours/competencies have not been met.
Students will then show these evaluations to the next site/preceptor to guide their learning and evaluation of progression.
Once your student completes their coursework for an incomplete course and the documentation related end-of-term tasks are complete, the next steps include:
CFA emails the Course Coordinator (CC) for that course (cc: CFD).
The CC will submit a grade change form.
Academic Affairs Advisor will confirm that it has been logged with the Registrar.
The student may then progress to the next clinical course OR graduate. STUDENTS MAY NOT LOG HOURS UNDER THE NEXT CLINICAL COURSE UNTIL THE GRADE HAS BEEN SUBMITTED BY THE CC.
